Eberron is bringing me back to D&D

Psychic Skeksis

First Post
Hi everyone. This is my first post to enworld and I thought I'd start by sharing a personal gaming revelation. There was a thread here I read recently on the subject of playing games other than D&D...here is my experience.

I started playing D&D back in 1980 with the red/blue box Basic/Expert set, then over the years played and DMed many systems, up to and including D&D 3e.

In 2001 I abandoned D&D entirely in favor of d20 Modern. I was starting to find D&D 3e too high-powered and complex and was enjoying the mix of horror/steampunk/zombie apocalypse games we were getting into with modern.

Then I saw Eberron.

Now I'm coming home, back to the D&D fold (with 3.5), hoping to curb the high-power and hoping to (one day) learn all the spells and feats that make D&D what it is (but that still intimidate me by their sheer volume).

Can anyone relate to this?

While I can't relate, I certainly understand where you are coming from. D&D 3.5 can be intimidating with all it choices and options.

Just a suggestion - once Eberron is released, just stick with it and the Core books until you are comfortable and happy and desire to add more options and choices. That sheer amount of books that add to a campaign is daunting. If you start adding willynilly, you will be right back to where you were - feeling overwhelmed.

Enjoy......and welcome back

Excellent advice. Buy the 3 core books (at www.walmart.com still 37% off, only $18.77 per book) and the Eberron book. That's it. You don't NEED the other stuff. Good luck, welcome back, remember "high-powered" is only in the mind set.

Welcome back, Psychic Skeksis! No matter what you're playing, I'm just glad you & yours are having fun.

I also agree with Black Moria. I hardly have any time left to cope with all possible variations available to D&D. The three core books are actually all you need to play. Although, I wish I could control my consumist urge as well as I am doing today.

I've cut back on what I buy these days, but there's still more than enough to feel overwhelmed. There's nothing wrong with putting on the brakes and putting in some limitations. I ran a 2e game where all that was allowed were the core books and the Tome of Magic. One of the better games I've run.

As far as power level, there's nothing at all wrong with high-powered PCs, as long as the challanges are appropriate. No matter how stingy you are with xp and loot, if the challange isn't there, all bets are off.

ive never felt this overwhelmed feeling that i keep hearing about, its always easy to include or leave out whatever you wish, though i allow my players access to just about anything that dosnt run contradictory to my world, and if they catch me early enough i usualy make minor changes in my worlds to better include what the player wants. Furthermore you dont have to know every little detail of every option, you just have to know how to find what you want quickly.

As for Eberon, i was really really excited about it, but now i'm only just really excited about it seeing as how i just got to start a game after about a year of not playing, so i'm using a world that ive been tinkering around with as opposed to Eberon which i would have liked to do. But at least im getting to flesh my cool homebrew which happened to be my entry to the setting search contest....I just realized that this post has gotten away from me and i am rambling now...so anyway welcolm back to dnd.
