This isn't really a dinosaur/Eberron specific issue, either. A gnome or halfling can get much of the same benefit using a riding dog.
Fair enough. Are there rules for that out there?

Also: Gatekeepers

Other than the druid feat in the ECS, anything else?
(and plant grafts from Magic of Eberron)
(and the Impure Prince PrC from Magic of Eberron ... a stretch to my mind but anyway)
[edit: forgot about the Gatekeeper Mystagogue for some reason] that counts for a lot.

Yeah, but aren't the halflings supposed to have some sort of mount they're bound to? One of the feats in the players guide (Talenta Dinosaur Bond) seems to be talking about this, but it doesn't talk about how you get the mount. If your mount dies you can use it on another one within 7 days.

Does the tricks system apply to normal animals?
I thought that was just for rangers/druids?

I agree, of course, that having a Fastieth in the dungeon (and functioning effectively) seems improbable given how the creature is described. A clawfoot is more reasonable in story terms.

Obviously it works great for a ranger or druid to have as an animal companion. But I guess I don't see the majority of halflings roaming the plains as having levels in those classes (and you'd need a few in ranger to get a clawfoot).
Tricks are for every animal. If you want an animal to, say, hop into a boat or get into a dungeon even if it's not trained for it, you have to "push it" (cue in Salt'n'Peppa), which takes a Handle Animal check and, iirc, a full-round action.

Rangers and Druids can "push" their companions much faster.

There's also the Wild Cohort feat at WotC's website, which is an "animal companion lite" for every class.

Re: Dinosaur Bond: you bond with any dinosaur you acquire, but, IMHO, the dinosaur has to be friendly towards you.
