Pot shots are unnecessary.

Frankly, it's more than a bit stunning that a fan had to do this rather than WotC. It truly boggles the mind...

Agreed, but I'd be interested in knowing why it wasn't done in the first place. There's always a reason for executive decisions of that level.

Why would you think that?

I think you can safely assume from one to three possible perspectives were responsible:
1)"Complete detailed map? They don't need a complete detailed map. All the pieces are right there anyway."
2)"Too much money."
3)"The map will just get yanked out while the book is still on the shelf unless it's shrinkwrapped - and then they'll complain about not being able to leaf through it."

This is an electronic map. Therefore the question really is: Why didn't WOTC provide a web enhancement with a fully detailed map. Thus #3 is not a valid reason.
