Does any know if there has ever been a book or Dragon article with a section on the basic ecology of the Underdark. Or any lightless would might work, but I'd prefer specific to the D&D Underdark.

I know fungus, blah blah, blah, phospheresent fungus, blah blah blah, but I'd love a little more indepth examination on where the energy for all this fungus originates and what kind of animals, plants and ecosystems live down there. I mean, all those Drow gotta eat something.

Just off the top of my head, how about the old Dungeoneer's Survival Guide? Surely that must have something in it you're looking for.

I agree that the DSG is probably your best bet. It has lots of useful information on the cultures, geography, and ecology of the Underdark. It is an old 1st Edition book, though, so it might be kinda hard to find a print copy.

I would suggest getting the ESD from the WotC Online Store. It's only $5. http://store.wizards.com/Product.asp?ProductID=6426

Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark may have some of what you're looking for. It's a 128-page Forgotten Realms accessory written by Eric L. Boyd back in the 2nd Edition AD&D days, and while the bulk of the work (detailing a number of underground cities) is Realms-specific (there's even a poster map in the back), some of the information in the front of the book is pretty generic. Not only details about some of the major Underdark races, but what it's like living - or simply adventuring - underground.
