Ecology Of...

I don't think this meets any of your criteria, but I'd love to see the ecology of the Gloom.

Me too. Those, like many of the creatures in the Epic Level Handbook, could really use some fleshing out.

so noted. :)

i think now would also be a good time to get into well-known creatures already in 3E, with lesser-known variants not yet featured in 3E.

upthread, i menioned the Dryad - Hamadyrad connection. Shade mentioned:

Shade said:
  • Rilmani (argenach, plumach, and abiorach await update).
  • Demodands (no unupdated forms, but I'd love to bring back Apomps and their racial name "gehreleth").
  • Lammasu (celestial lammasu variant)
  • Illithidae (cessirid awaits update)
  • Gargoyle (margoyle and others await update)
  • Roper (storoper awaits update)
  • Bulette (gohlbron awaits update...sorta)
  • Ki-rin (t'uen-rin awaits update)

Another one: gibberling (brood gibberling variant)
and

Yet another: Roc (Moon Roc variant from I6: Needle)
and
Shade said:
Yet another: basilisk (greater basilisk, boalisk, and dracolisk could all be the featured creature)
and
Shade said:
Cockatrice (pyrolisk)

plus, i mentioned a few more:
BOZ said:
yep! plus the storoper/roper, gorgimera/chimera, korred/satyr, lamia noble (lamara)/lamia, xaren/xorn, killmoulis and buckawn/brownie (with a reference to our quickling, if/when it gets published), margoyle/kapoacinth/gargoyle, wolfwere/jackalwere, urd/kobold, greater medusa (snake-bodied)/medusa, atomie/sprites, spirit troll/invisible stalker, and vodyanoi/umber hulk. :D
though
Shade said:
The kobold's had a recent Ecology, so we'd have to package the urds with something else.

We probably can't do an Ecology of the Brownie since it's only appeared on WotC's site in 3E thus far.

Vodyanoi has already been covered in 3E, but it wouldn't hurt to reprint the differences in an ecology of the umber hulk.
yet
BOZ said:
we could do the "classic vodyanoi" like they did with the elemental weirds. :) as a matter of fact, we could do the same thing with the kelpie and other creatures which were made way different in 3E. ;)

so, heh, what other creatures in that same vein are out there? lots, i'm sure. let's see what else we can come up with...

Add Dragon Horse to Ki'rin as well
Add Gargorian (Dragon 101) to gargoyle

Also...

Efreet (Sollux, Mystara)
Hydra (Ukuyatangi, Dragon 31)
Owlbear (While not a variant, the vulturehound is similiar in construction and perhaps origin)
Succubus (Incubus, Dragon 54)
Gnoll (Ghuuna)
Purple Worm (Mottled Purple Worm, Dragon 68)
Linnorm (any of the remaining linnorms)
Manticore (Mantimera, Dragon 101)

Add sea centaur (Dragon 116) to centaur
Add spouter, archer, stone lion (Dragon 223) to gargoyle

Spectator (Searechter, Dragon 139)
Ettin (Biclops, Dragon 172)

The Monster Hunters fought a purple worm, so it is a bit more recent than issue 68.

I want to back Shade with the locatha- another old critter than has never gotten any love, in print at least.

Right-o. Just the mottled variant appeared in that issue. The actual ecology occurred much later (see Echohawk's excellent summary earlier upthread).

i think i'd like to avoid redoing ecology articles and re-using creatures which were introduced in the original ecology article in the first place... that's a bit to retread even for me. ;)

OK, after some thought, I'd like to start with the following 5 ideas for a query. Options abound, however, so we can always work with more in the future, and I certainly hope to do so if this meets with any success at all. :)

Bullywug
Detail the sleeping god Ramenos
Give them a racial feat which emulates their good ol-fashioned Hop attack
Incorporate ecological info from the Monstrous Manual, especially the “advanced bullywug”
References: Monsters of Faerun, Monstrous Manual, Complete Book of Humanoids

Dryad
Detail their goddess, Verenestra
Present the Hamadryad
References: Monster Manual, Monstrous Manual, Dragon #87

Ki-rin
Detail their god Koriel
Present related creatures t’uen-rin and dragon horse
Incorporate ecological info from the Monstrous Manual
References: Oriental Adventures, Monstrous Manual

Satyr
Detail their god, Damh
Present the korred
Describe a satyr party (see Monstrous Manual)
References: Monster Manual, Monstrous Manual, Dragon #155, Complete Book of Humanoids

Treant
Detail their god Emmantiensien
Present the quickwood?
Incorporate ecological info from the Monstrous Manual
References: Monster Manual, Monstrous Manual, Dragon #79, Dragon #283

If you can think of other ideas to add to these, or other sources for which to look for information, please speak up. :)

I must point this out, as well:
