Edition War Across the Net or Where Have You Been?

As many frikkin rules lawyers as there are on ENWorld, you'd think people would be able to follow the instructions at the beginning of the thread

I've had a couple of 'debates' in real life. Usually I quickly go to, "sure fine, prove it, run the game, I'll play". Almost worked once. I think something similar started the WOW D20 3.5 game I'm in.

I never thought about it before, but I do think that ENWorld has escaped a lot of the worst of it. I like that a lot. I'm a fan of every edition of D&D.

Just to add that I'd play with enthusiasm. I'd really give a good try.

It's widespread online, most mentioned the boards I frequent above, and offline. As someone who runs both latest editions and many, many other games, I get tired of the one-note comments and the inability to discuss the finer points of a game lest a pile on from one side or the other begin. For the first seven years on EN World I had a grand total of ONE person on my ignore list (until he was banned) and in the last two years I have had to resort to adding over a dozen of the more fervent fans. And EN World is the most sane of the boards I visit.

I got lectured by a complete stranger at my local game store. Seriously. It was a little odd.

Heh. At the WWD&D Day last May I saw (didn't participate in) a heated debate between a 4E and some other edition fan (couldn't tell if it was 2E or 1E he was talking about). Later the 4E fan was at my table for the D&D adventure and I prefaced introducing myself as the DM by telling them all a little about my history with D&D and how I have found a lot to love about every edition. After the game the 4E fan thanked me for showing him that 'old timers' could still be reasonable.

I hear ya, or I would if I didn't have you on ignore. ;) I didn't have anyone on my ignore list either until the edition wars. Now, I've managed to keep it to a few hard core editionistas, but it's still a shame.

It's seems we all lost our innocence in this war... :p

RPG.net is a pisshole devout of intellectual conversation. I'd rather have 4chan - at least they're honest about their idiocy and trolling. Places like there make me ashamed that I actually do like some of the 4e mechanics, because then I'd have to be associated with them to some extent. That said, the fact that there's so much hate aimed at previous editions tells you that it's quite the opposite of no edition war - the edition war is burning long through the night, brighter then most other places.

Edition wars exist wherever editions exist. That said, it's easy to not get involved. Edition wars only happen when both sides agree to put aside civility and decide instead to just scream or insult the other side. If one side refuses to do so, the only way the edition war can happen is if a greater power (such as a moderator) gets involved and forces the issue. Likewise, that's how you stop an edition war.

I think EN World has been much more calm due to the fact that people got tired of having dry scratchy throats from yelling too much ;p. As fun as it can be telling people on the internet that they're wrong, it's not that fun when the website itself doesn't back you up. Which incidentally is why the edition war still rages so strongly on places like RPG.net or Wizards' forums - because the moderators there have taken a side.

Lastly, I hesitate to claim that the edition war rages in /tg/, simply because that's too specific. /tg/ is a hellish version of valhalla. It doesn't matter what edition you mention, or even what game - someone there is going to fight you for it. All war against everything, all the time.

I think you mean "devoid". And no, it's not. Just because you don't like what people have to say doesn't mean that good conversation isn't taking place. Even in threads that highlight the population's support for 4th Edition and dislike for 3rd/3.5/Pathfinder the conversations are usually pretty well-considered.

Really, that's some completely unnecessary hyperbole.

I am also not sure it's a grandma-friendly thing to insult other gaming boards or their members. Especially since some RPG.net members are also EN World members.
