• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

Editions of D&D you have played the most in your life

  1. 3rd Edition/3.5. This I have played the most, and still play to this day. I also have the most books for it.
  2. 2nd Edition. This was my introduction to D&D. Once third edition came around, we clung onto it stubbornly for a while, until we actually tried 3rd edition, and then never looked back.
  3. 3rd Edition, D20 Future. What my group has just started playing this year. A ton of fun. It's D&D in spaaaaace!
  4. 3rd Edition, Call of Cthulhu. I ran two campaign for this, which was a lot of fun. So much preparation work though.
  5. 5th Edition. I have only played this for one day. It was alright.

  1. 3rd Edition. Played more or less regularly for ~8 years, first 3.0 then 3.5 then back to 3.0. No Pathfinder.
  2. 5th Edition. Played since the playtest, ~5 years but not nearly as regularly/frequently as the 3rd.
  3. OD&D & Variants. Played sparsely for a few years in the 90s.
  4. AD&D 1st/2nd Edition. Played only a half-dozen evenings or so in the 90s, not even sure how much of it was 1st or 2nd. Otherwise played lots of PC games based on it, but it shouldn't count.
  5. 4th Edition. Played (or rather playtested) 2-3 nights before shelfing for good.

1. 3E / Pathfinder: Introduction to D&D and longest campaigns.
2. 5E : Current system for most campaigns.
3. 4E: A few more sessions, but there were a lot of anti-4E grognards.
4. 2E: A session or two before everyone switched to 3E.

Pathfinder for like 4 or five years. Played a year Kingmaker, ran Rise of the Runelords for two years and then a short Forgotten realm adventure and the small Eberron adventures.
5e since it came out, 3 years. Ran Phandalin, two times Rise of Tiamat, Storm king thunder, half out of the abyss, played half of curse of strand. Also ran and play many one shots. Now I'm running the original Dark Sun adventures.
4e I think like 4 or 5 months, I played a custom game.
AD&D 2e one year playing Dragonlance then we moved to 5e. My wizard is still on the road.

nice topic! Let's see...

started in 1990 with BECMI, after a couple of years we moved to AD&D, mostly for the great Campaign Settings.

Started 3e in the year 2000, until 4e came out. Played one campaign of 4e from level 1 to 30, took us two years. Then went back to 3e and AD&D 2e until 5e came out.

to recap

1990 - BECMI
1992 - AD&D 2e
2000 - 3e
2008 - 4e
2010 - 2e/3e
2014 - 5e

as of 2004 I started keeping blogs of my campaigns

1. BEC(M) - we stopped at Companion set
2. AD&D 1st - Dragonlance took a while to get through
3. D&D 3.5 - rekindled the D&D fire
4. D&D 4th - ran two campaigns
5. D&D 5 - our current version, slowly building up to take the number 3 spot

The edition I played the most must be 2nd ed during high school and college.

I then played 3.x for several years. I avoided 4e, and have now been running 5e for over a year, but I haven't played it per se, only DMed.

1) AD&D 1E, from junior high through to late college.

2) 3-3.5E as a "grown" man, for a few years.

3) Moldvay Basic as a kid for a few years.

4) 5E, now for a year or so.

...

and a WHOLE lot of other RPGs along the way.
