Effect of Miasma (MotW)

Drown is 6th level spell. It kills you in three rounds: after first you are at 0, after second at -1 and after third you are dead.
Instantenous duration (can't be dispelled, Miasma can), one fortitude save + spell resistance, healing check before death stabilize.

Miasma is not really very usefull agains fighter (if target can continue acting normally (except for speech))

As magekilling spell it should be compared to silence (as most targets could anyway survive for 20-30 round without making a single check).

Making it fortitude save should be balanced, but fort save each round would make spell useless (at least for killing).

Hey, if you want to get technical, the inert gas will at most make you light headed untill you expel it on your next breath. Inert gas is not going to drown you unless it is the only thing to breath.

On the game side though, is the only game recourse to watch a fellow die? With all the time you have, shouldn't some spell help? Drown is defeated by any magical healing. Could you do that to some one one they fail their hold breath check?

Last I heard, Miasma HAD in fact been errated to have a Fort Negates save. Maybe in FAQ? Maybe in Sage Response?

Not to toss about names, but I seem to associate KReynolds with this memory (of Miasma getting a save) so maybe he knows something.

I believe the correct way to run this spell is:
If the subject doesn't hold their breath then they can do nothing but cough and spit.

If the subject holds their breath (and who wouldn't after the first round) then they can continue to fight, but without speaking, until their breath gives out and they need to make Con checks.

Don't forget that they can hold their breath for a few rounds, cough and gag for one (resetting the hold-breath saving throw), then hold their breath again. So you are out of action for one round out of every five, unless you natural 1 your save...
