Elements and their relation to ability scores.

I'm trying to set up a system where there are six core elements, and each element is magically aligned with a particular ability score. I'm trying to figure out what arrangement is best.

The six ability scores are, of course:

Strength
Dexterity
Constitution
Intelligence
Wisdom
Charisma

The six elements I'm using are:

Air
Death
Earth
Fire
Life
Water

I've got some figured out, but others I'm at a loss for. And of course I'm willing to take suggestions for changes.

Air -
Death -
Earth - Strength
Fire -
Life - Constitution
Water - Wisdom

Interesting set of elements. Having Death in there makes it a bit difficult though... I would go with

Strength-- Death
Dexterity-- Air
Constitution-- Earth
Intelligence-- Fire
Wisdom-- Water
Charisma-- Life

Str -> Death (what it can be used to create or avoid)
Dex -> Water (water is "flexible," flowing around opposition)
Con -> Earth ("Solid as stone")
Int -> Fire (Spark of intelligence?)
Wis -> Water (??)
Cha -> Life (exhuberance & livelyness)

Air - Dexterity
Death - Intelligence
Earth - Strength
Fire - Charisma
Life - Constitution
Water - Wisdom

Air and Dexterity seem to be a natural fit.
Death and Intelligence was process of elimination... every rationale I come up with is contrived.
Fire and Charisma just comes from the idea of "a fiery personality"

This is a tough assignment, I will divide each element into opposing groups.

Air- Dex
Earth- Con

These are easy, they represent the difference between moving and unmoving, speed and durability, etc. Both are necessary for survival but contribute in different ways and both are physical skills.

Fire- Int
Water- Wis

This is more difficult, but both are mental skills. As the classic difference between Int and Wis, so is between fire and water. Fire is based more on inspiration and creativity, whereas water depends on perception and wisdom (rather learned things, it is experiences which offer solutions).

Life- Cha
Death- Str

Finally the difference between life and death, black and white, good and evil (not necessarily, but they are commonly associated). This was the most difficult pairing of ability scores, but I believe it works. Both represent strength, though in death you find the strength of the body, and in life strength of the spirit. Str is most often a quick means to an end, ending someone else's life by overpowering them, whereas charisma represents inner strength, strength to overcome obstacles and strength that others can see and relate to.

Overall, it seems like an intersting start to...something? Keep us posted! :)

Strength - Earth
Dexterity - Air
Constitution - Life
Intelligence - Fire
Wisdom - Water
Charisma - Death

Charisma is the attarbute use by the undead in place of Constitution thus it can be considered as ones spiritual life force opposed to ones physical life force. Intelligence pairs with Fire because it is proactive and is fueled by the need to expand and grow to encompass new things. Wisdom is like Water, it is reactive, calm but forceful, and has the ability to cool and quench temper or folly.

Well, to be honest I already had a clear idea in mind. I just wanted to see how much people differ on what they would assign the ability scores to. This is for Elements of Magic, an alternative magic system originally published by Natural 20 Press, and now being revised for ENPublishing to be 3.5e compatible (and to fix some bugs).

You can infuse a person with elemental energy to enhance their ability scores, and the layout we have so far is thus:

Strength - Earth. It's heavy, forceful, strong, plus most weapons are made of earth, stone, or metal.

Dexterity - We had a toss-up. I'm helping the original designer revise the book, and he says Dexterity should be Fire, because Fire is fast, and it lets off light, the fastest thing of all. I say Air, because air moves of its own accord and can travel anywhere, and creatures of the air are most nimble. While fire might equate speed, air equates with mobility, light-footedness, and the aim needed for arrows and such.

Constitution - Life. Constitution is what keeps you alive and healthy, so the connection with Life seemed the most obvious of all the elements.

Intelligence - Death. I'll admit, this one may seem a bit contrived, but what are some of the classical myths of fantasy that involve knowledge? Selling one's soul for knowledge; liches existing even after death so they can continue to perfect their magic; ancient tombs holding obscure lore that has been forgotten. Knowledge often sits, unused. Plus, if you're smart, you might be cocky, and you'll get yourself killed.

Wisdom - Water. Wisdom makes us think of purity, cool-headedness, and being able to sense things. I admit to being inspired by Bruce Lee here. Water can take the form of whatever you put it in. It can act however it needs to, strong and crashing like a wave, or gentle and soothing like a spring. It's balanced. Also, Judeo-Christian imagery often connects water with divinity, and heck, many of the high profile miracles involve water. God always struck me as a wise entity.

Charisma - Here we have the other half of the conundrum. Cyberzombie, the original creator, has air as Charisma, perhaps because he thinks most of the charming people on the planet are vapid and airheaded. I say Fire, because fire is the spark that gets things moving. Air might be light-hearted and hard to offend, but when you want to convince someone to do what you want, you light torches and lead the charge, or burn brands and threaten them with pain. So I say Fire should be Charisma.

Now, I feel I have more weight for my case because we also have paraelements, positive elements, and negative elements. Imagine that you have a globe, and Life is at the north pole, Death at the south pole, and Air, Fire, Earth, and Water form a ring around the equator. Air opposes Earth, Fire opposes Water.

Now, also on the equator you have the para-elements: Lightning, Ice, Ooze, and Lava. Lightning is Air and Fire, Ice is Air and Water, Ooze is Water and Earth, and Lava is Earth and Fire.

Each paraelement would have two related ability scores:

Paraelements:
Lightning - Dex, Cha (this works regardless of whether me or Cyberzombie wins)

Ice - Dex and Wis (I say); or Cha and Wis (Cyberzombie)

Ooze - Wis and Con

Lava - Cha and Str (me); or Dex and Str (Cyberzombie)

So far we're a little indecisive, but now we have the positive and negative elements. They're formed by taking life or death, and combining it with one of the cardinal elements on the equator.

Positive Elements:
Light (fire/life) - Cha, Con (me) or Dex, Con (Cyberzombie)

Steam (water/life) - Wis, Con. I suppose Steam might be better called Mist? Or Rain?

Sound (air/life) - Dex, Con (me) or Cha, Con (CZ).

Crystal (earth/life) - Str, Con

Negative Elements:
Shadow (fire/death) - Cha, Int (me) or Dex, Int (CZ). I personally think that, by D&D standards, shadow is too cool not to be related to charisma. :)

Acid (water/death) - Wis, Int.

Void (air/death) - Dex, Int (me) or Cha, Int (CZ).

Metal (earth/death) - Str, Int

As you can see, it's not really clear which way it should go. I guess we'll just have to do paper-scissors-rock to see who's version we go with. ;) I'm just glad that we're not trying to add ability scores to the other elements (Force, Nature, Time, Dimension, Spirit, and Chance; plus Good, Evil, Chaos, Law, and Neutrality).

What will be fun, though, is when you see some of the more interesting spells we have. We encourage players to add their own flavor, but we've cooked up some interesting ideas of our own. Like a spell that evokes powerful goodly energy to smite evil creatures, while simultaneously encasing them in a warding circle that they can't escape. :)

I would go with your interpretation.

Str=Earth
Dex = Air (air molecules are constantly moving at approximately the speed of sound)
Con=Life (I would call it light or energy)
Int = Death (I would call it darkness or entropy)
Wis = Water (the depths idea)
Cha = Fire (passion)

When I did mine, I did it as follows:
Fire = Str (fire = power)
Air = Dex (air = movement)
Earth = Con (earth = life/the body)
Shadow = Int (you can only understand it with the mind not experience it with the senses)
Water = Wis (the depths of knowledge and awareness)
Light = Cha (the glow of passion)

DC

Str = Earth
Dex = Air
Con = Life
Int = Fire
Wis = Water
Cha = Death

Let me explain the "Cha = Death" part.

1) "The way of the samurai is the way of death." It is only by accepting that you are already dead that you can truely perform at the pinacle of your abilities, especially the battle of wills (Intimidate check) before a duel.

2) As has been mentioned, among the undead, Cha passes for Con. Clearly, Con is Life, so Cha must be Death.

3) Fiends are charming!

4) Dark Sorcery is cool. 'Nuff said.

5) A dark world where the most charismatic leaders were tainted would be cool, too.

6) Cha is your ability to manipulate, bully and lie to others. Sounds pretty dark to me.

'K, I'll take a stab...

STR = Water
DEX = Air
CON = Life
INT = Fire
WIS = Earth
CHA = Death

OK, we have three sets of opposing elements, and three sets of linked pairs of stats. (I always think of INT as mental STR; WIS as mental DEX; and CHA as mental CON).

Dex and Con are obvious. With Dex being Air, its opposite number, Wis, gets Earth--which makes sense, as 'wise' and 'down-to-earth' are pretty darn similar.

For the same reason (linkages), Cha gets Death. Although Nifft's reason list works as well.

Now, Fire and Water, Str and Int. Water is heavy; fire is not; intellectual prowess is sometimes referred to as fire...

OK, the Strength-Water link is pretty weak, I suppose, but the rest I think make sense.

I agree with the...

Str = Earth
Dex = Air
Con = Life
Int = Death
Wis = Water
Cha = Fire

It all fits nicely in my mind, except for maybe death. But Int for Death doesn't seem too far fetched. Death can not be out smarted. The Grim Reaper is usually portrayed as sort of omiscient. He knows everyone's name and exactly the right time to come for you. Plus he plays a mean game of chess ;) according to some movie. Or in some religions, death is a trickster out smarts you. And there is also the promise of knowledge after death. When you die, the meaning of life will be revealed to you or some such.
