Useful, yes. But the cost (40% xp penalty) is a bit steep IMO. :D

Yeah. The XP penalty does hurt quite a bit. Seriously, I don't know who's bright idea it was to make Wizard the favored class for Drow males in the FRCS. There were far more fighters than wizards in all the literature.

I don't know what the ELH mentions as far as stat blocks goes. You could just make sure your calculations are correct before writing the block. If its a block from someone else, you may be out of luck.

I generally just go by the stats given, rather than trying to backwards engineer every block. Its much easier that way, and adifference of 1 skill point or a +/-1 to attack or damage generally isn't that big of a deal.

I don't think Epic level Rogue would be in that stat. It would just read Rogue 6 instead. It would be different IF the rogue had more than 20 levels I imagine.

Well if you list:
Rog6/Rgr5/Brb5/Harper Scout 5

You cant check to see if the BAB was calculated correctly. It would be better to list:
Rog5/Rgr5/Brb5/Harper Scout 5/Epic Rogue 1
But thats confusing because the Epic Rogue 1 would indicate something different if you had level 20 in Rogue already.

So does the ELH recommend a way to list the classes and levels of multi-classed characters to avoid confusion?

Well, I don't know about the ELH (yet), but here's what I would recommend, if you're desperately concern with verification:

Rog 5+1/Rgr 5/Brb 5/Harper Scout 5 (when the 6th level of rogue was taken post-20th.)

Reserving the "Epic Rogue 1" notation for the actual "Epic Rogue" class. So :
Rog 5+15/Rgr 5/Brb 5/Harper Scout 5/Epic Rogue 1

Another alternative would be to further differentiate the "epic" levels, like so:
Rog 5+5E/Rgr 5+3E/Brb 5+5E/Harper Scout 5

It depends on what you mean by 'Epic level'.

You have to take Epic levels after level 20, but they can be Epic levels in normal classes.

You can't take a level of the 'Epic Barbarian' class, as you need 20 levels of Barbarian for that. You can take a 'Epic level' of the Barbarian class though.

Geoff.
