[ELH] Is the art in this book utter crap?

gfunk

First Post
I'm not much of an art critic but I know what I like. Having purchased the ELH, I noticed that the art is pretty darn crappy. The notable exception is the monster section and the pic of the blackguard-- was this done by a different artist.

Some of the crappier pictures are:

1) The assassin -- what the heck is over his eyes? The same stuff they use in tanning salons?

2) The brown giant being pelted by arrows (at the end of the Feat section IIRC) -- what is this crap? My 5 year old nephew can draw bettern than this!

I dig the art in this book. How can you not like epic Tordek? :D

I like the art in the ELH. It's no Oriental Adevntures for interior art, but it's better than DnDg... Gods, I shudder whenever I think of the picture of the elven god Mike Jackson...

The art in the ELH is over-the-top. Just like the rules. That's what I expected, and I'm not disappointed with it at all, really.

Is it as good as the art in the core 3? Probably not, but it's better than that in the Psi-handbook, IMO.

Well gfunk, I'm with you on this one. I've gotten all the WotC 3rd ed D&D books, and I was actually amazingly disappointed with the art in ELH. Frankly, it was an eyesore, and an atrocity. I hope they don't go that route on more books.

The art in all the core books is too Image comics/anime based for my tastes. ELH is no exception.

I'd hardly call ANY of it "anime based"... which is a shame, I like anime.

I agree Flexor, the D&D 3E art as a whole really sucks. It looks more like Warhammer figures or anime than anything else. Why do we need spiky armor or elves that look like Joan Rivers (Mialee)? Give me fat halflings, Norman style helmets, and scary David Bowie elves! I understand they wanted to change D&Ds image, but geez, you can go over the line! IMO, the old 1E book covers were the pinnacle of gaming art (you gotta love the Easley DMG cover with the nasty looking guy opening the doors to hell).

That said, there are a few pieces of art in the MM that look good (the dragons), but overall its pretty disappointing. I look back fondly on a time when realistic drawings were what was aimed for, not the silly spiky armor that is more likely to maim the wearer than the attacker. When dwarven women had beards, and Easley, Elmore, Parkinson, and Halloway were the standard.

Oh well, I'm done ranting now. :D

Some of the artwork is awesome....some of it is, well, not.

Epic Assassin?

I thought that was the Epic Aviator? Kinda like Randy Quaid from Independence Day or something....
