Elven favored class Sorcerer?

A thing to remember is that a favored class is a matter of culture, not blood, although it may be questionable. If you change the culture of a race in your campaign, I think it's very fine to change its favored class to suit the concept.

I like the idea of Elves being curious, therefore attracted by the study of magic knowledge rather than by the exploration of an innate attitude for magic. Neverthless, in my campaign there have been probably as many Elf Sorcerers as Elf Wizard.

Remeber that from the game point of view, a favored class does not make a BETTER character of that class, but it only makes it easier to have either a few levels of the favored class - as a secondary class - or a few levels of another class - when the favored class is the main. That is, Elven Wizards are easily able to pick-up fe levels in something else without hampering their overall advancement with Xp penalties, and at the same time every Elf can study a little Wizardry without those penalities.

BTW, MM's Wild Elves have Sorcerer as favored class, and I think it suits them very well. :)

I've used favored class:Sorcerer for a while now.

Heck, if elves are supposed to be magical, not learn magic, it just makes sense.

I've fiddled with the idea of starting a game where every elf must either start off as a sorcerer, or at least be an apprentice level sorcerer.

I just thought of this! How about a PRc just for elves that grants spontanious healing like a cleric. it would be "Blessed of Corillion".

*whaps Argent with the Rolled-Up Newspaper of Justice*

No! Bad Argent! Bad! No wacky "it's better than everyone else because it's elven" prestige classes! Don't you remember the Complete Elves Handbook? Don't you remember the horrors that it brought?

No special treatment for elves, young man. Don't make me get the Cube!

But I was just thinking out loud. Besides there is nothing wrong with that PRc idea because it makes a lot of sence. unlike many of the "racial" PRcs.

<mutter.... hit me with a rolled up newspaper of Justice....>:p

How I handle this in my current campaign:

Elves do not have the Favored Class: Wizard. Their Favored Class is Sorcerer. Wood Elves do not have a -2 CH score but rather a -2 WS score. Elves are proficient with either longsword or longspear. They have the normal bow proficiencies.
Amongst the Elves Half-Elves are known as Elfkin. Those who are friends of Half-Elves also use the term.

Gnomes have a +2 IN rather than a +2 CN. Their favored Class is Wizard, favored specialist arcane school is Illusion and a favored PrC is Shifter.
The Lantanese Gnomes are world renown as Artificers. Note: In my campaign world Gnomes primarily populate the nation of Lantan. Priests of Gond from Lantan frequently take up the Gondsman PrC.
Gnomes with an IN score of 10 or higher know three Cantrip spells usable once per day each.

I give Elves FC: Sorceror, as well as +2 CHA (I penalize them in Strength). To me, that better fits Elves' magical nature as well as their powerful personalities.

To quote a horrible movie that I think we've all seen:

"Humans use magic...Elve are a part of it!"

Yes, a favored class of sorcerer synergizes nicely with a bonus to Charisma. Both are appropriate features for an elf, and more beneficial than the package they have in the PHB. Anyone else notice that the Con penalty is a detriment to the prime skill for mages, Concentration? As far as wizards go, there's not much in the core elf package to drool over.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Monte Cook's own Ptolus campaign gives elves a favored class of sorcerer (rather than wizard):
Elves, Shoal. When non-elves simply say "elf," they're probably referring to the Shoal. Generally dark haired and dark skinned, these elves are prevalent in the Sea Kingdoms, for they love the sea and ships. Some live along the Whitewind Sea as well, but they care less for the cold, and so they number fewer than those in the south.

[Game Info: As Elf in PH except favored class is sorcerer, not wizard. Also have a +2 racial bonus to Profession (sailor)]

I've done it that way for the get-go and never had any balance issues. I believe I used a grey elf variant (-2 S -2C +2 Dx +2 I and +2 CH). Funny thing is, in both cases where one was played, they multiclassed with wizard early on. Guess they liked the idea of having a crap load of low level spells or something.
