Elven favored class Sorcerer?

If it fits your world, then do it. Considering I threw out favored classes altogther (except as flavor text) and the game hasn't come crashing down. I basiaclly treat everyone as human. I give the half elves the extra skill points to make up for it. Still, no one plays them.

The skill points and feat are enough that humans are the most populous PC race, as it should be for a human-centric campaign.

Also remember that when it comes to your world, there is no balance. GIve all wizards d8 hit points and let them wear meduim armor if you want - it will just be a world that wizards dominate in. Balance in only really important in external, published suppliments where it may come into standard campaigns. For a nonstandard campaign, there is no imbalance, only flavor. :)

It's a refrence to the Half-Celestial Awakened Gelatinous Cube with Cleric Levels... our very own Cube Notan'elf.

The call of "Cuuuuube" (angelic chorus-style) is both his battle cry, and favourite saying.

*nod*

^_^

Edit/Additional: Oh! What does it mean in specific refrence to this post? Oh sorry, my bad. Our man Cube, the Right Hand of Jello Justice was statted up in a thread discussing which race people prefered: humans or elves. Cube came about because, well.. he's just such a better option than playing elves.

Honestly, I think the Wu-Jen (from Oriental Adventures) is a much better fit than Wizard for elven magic.

Arcane spellcaster of equivalent power (9th-level spell at level 17), the Wu-Jen is caracterized by a heavy focus on elemental magic (i.e., primal nature magic) and several quirks and taboos that are necessary for him to gain his power. In exchange for these taboos, he gain a greater power in some of his spells, which are always affected by a metamagic feat, freely (without paying a higher slot). Wu-Jens can't be lawful.

This is what makes an elven magic elfish. Unpredictable, source of strange customs, and more primeval, more close to nature.

Still, it is a learned magic, and my elves learn their magic. Contrarily to dragons, titans, outsiders, or even gnomes, they aren't innately magical -- they just wish they would, and they makes everything they can to have other believe they are. They are attracted by magic like moths to flames; but moths aren't flames; and elves aren't magic.

(Similarily, my dwarves, lawful, clannish, and honor-bound, have the samurai class as a favored class rather than fighter. And this, despite my world not being an oriental one.)

Good point. The whole concept of favored classes always seemed against the open-ended spirit of 3e anyway. And humans have plenty of appeal without it.

As for half-elves, I have to wonder... why have'em in the first place? Why half-elves and not half-dwarves or half-halflings? A half-breed race serves a purpose if it provides an ECL 0 version of a race like orcs, but a half-breed of a race that's already ECL 0? What's the point? Go ahead and play a human or elf or whatever. assume that he takes after the culture in which he was raised, and let the half-breed quality be a flavor thing.

But back to the topic. Given that elves are supposed to be flighty dilettantes, sorcerer does make more sense to me than wizard. Can't you just see them studying a spell and getting distracted by a butterfly or something?

At any rate, wizard or sorcerer works fine depending on your favored concept of elves... so pick whatever you want and run with it. But don't sit here and try to tell everyone that your way "makes more sense." It's all a matter of taste.

 What a colossal - - -

I have always thought of Elves as beings with magic in there blood. Hence Sorcerer works better for me than Wizard but they are also a learned people with years and years to Study and perfect their art. We have had this discussion over and over and came to the conclusion that Elves favored class can be either Wizard or Sorcerer. It all depends on what type of Elf you play and how you play your character.

But that is just my 2cents worth.;)

I think that Sorcerer is more fitting for elves. My current character is a half elf Sorcerer. She gets her Sorcerer powers from her mother, who was an elf. As for not having higher spells right away, elves live a lot longer, and I think it is fitting that the older they get the more their powers develop over time.
Just my two cents

Actually, I like that Wu Jen idea that Gez mentioned. Possibly the samural one as well...

...man, now I need to look at my OA books again.

Actually, a sorcerer can bypass the whole lack of spells and gain a few more per day by taking a single level in wizard. This signifies that the character has discovered his/her innate magical ability, and has spent a bit of time studying magic to better understand it. So basically, you slow your sorcerer spell progression by a single level, but give yourself access to A LOT MORE spells, making you a REALLY bad-ass spellcaster.
