Yeah, the version in the SRD could be written better. The one from the books is much more clear about it.

Mind you, I wonder what the problem would be with having an empowered maximised fireball just do the straight 90 damage, now I think about it? It would be an 8th level spell, after all...
I understand that the SRD is the correct version.
You take the variable 1d4+1 or 1d8+lvl and roll it then roll again and /2.
the Jester said:1d4*1.5, then add 1.
Empower only increases the variable numbers (dice rolled).
A double empowered buff would be (1d4*2) +1.
