EN World Book Club

For previous selections you can look at my .sig, in the first post in this thread. I think that is a complete list, with links to the discussion threads.

Also, if you want Duncan Haldane to pick you as the selector of the next book, start campaigning here.

So, anyone got their hand in the air for the next book? Mark?

Duncan (currently about 2/3 of the way through Idlewild, after having purchased too many rules supplements recently).

I'd like to put myself forward to make the next selection and lead the next discussion. I've a couple of ideas for interesting choices that complement what's already been chosen. Of course, the choice is entirely yours.

The current Selector is Duncan Haldane, and his selection is:

Idlewild
by Nick Sagan

Reading Time: July 1 - August 15
Discussion Begins: August 15

So, anyone else finished Idlewild? I finished it a few days ago and I'm ready to start discussing it on Sunday.

Duncan

Joe;

I've a (very tentative) suggestion.

The idea is that periodically someone will select a book for everyone to read. After a reading period of about a month, the person who selected the book (the Selector) will start a discussion thread. The new (proposed) format will then have the Selector nominate his/her successor. This way, we keep people involved in the process.

Part of the problem I've noticed in my thoughts for next book selection? thread and the previous book club thread, is that no-one seems to be able to agree on anything. If you ask if a book seems like a good idea, you don't get much response. If you ask for book ideas: everyone puts forward their ideal book (each of which tends only to be only vouched for by one person), and you just get a long list of books.

Why not use the poll feature to decide the next selection? Given a short list, we can let everyone vote for as many books as they like (depending on whether they'd read them or not). And we can get the decision from the poll's result?

This is just a tentative suggestion. There are obviously things that can go wrong. I think people would perhaps be more likely to get involved given a chance to have a say which book is read. And it may help choose a book more likely to be read widely. (And the poll will be on the front page).

What are everyone's thoughts? If there is a postive response, I don't mind trialing this idea using my selection.

Generous of you to throw your selection to a public vote, nikolai. I like the idea. Why don't you narrow it down to a few that you think fit the criteria and run with it.

I like that others are taking initiative and throwing ideas out there. We could really breath some life into this thing. Thanks all.
