EN World City Project: Guilds and Organizations

I'm happy to help out, but don't want to get in the way of your concepts...

that said, whenever I've incorporated wardens into a campaign they have been separated from the military (with the exception of those trained by the military for specific purposes)... with their powers/authority reaching significantly beyond that of most soldiers in this instance, I'd think it'd be even more important to separate the two...

I certainly agree with your idea that Lady Kelvin would frown upon any interaction between her standing military and the mercenary/guard forces that would usually associate with a guild of guards...

you might even see two distinct associations/organisations form... one for the state men-of-arms and another for independant/mercenary armsmen... you could even have an interesting rivallry between the two groups...

does that sound interesting or something you might want to work with...?

Quickly sketching out the military organization has quickly become a much bigger topic, I still haven't touched on military officers or the city militia yet. I got no idea's on guild membership except that perhaps the 50 members of Lady Kelvin's Elite Guard probably have to relinquish all outside memberships and loyalties when raised to the rank of Elite, the rest of the common soldiers would probably be allowed to unionize as long as it didn't affect the day to day running of the city. And yes I would definatly see a rivalry between private guards and mercenaries and the city military, The city guard would probably view all private guards as mercenaries with no loyalty except to the highest bidder, and they would probably be viewed by the private guards as over loyal toadies who work hard for a city when mercenary work is much easier, allows for more free time and probably pays better.

Edit: I separated the Rangers from the regular army, to come more in line of what you were saying about wardens.

I also have no real clue how the official military would interact with a Guild of Guards, I assume that the Guild would be for all guards, official and private and also for mercenaries in the town. Lady Kelvin seems like the type that might frown on her personal elite guard having secondary loyalties to a organization or person not her.

The guild of Guards are pretty much how you describe them. Mostly made up of private soldiers and mercenaries.

And I would say that all city guards and the elite royal guards are often initially recruited out of this group, due to their reputation, but would then pass from the membership in the Guild of Guard to being part of the city's military. Their loyalities shouldn't be divided but the two groups do tend to get along in the better parts of the city.

In the poor regions, the city guards and Guild guards tend to butt heads once in a while (especially those being employed by the more unsavory members of the Merchants Guild and Thieves Guild).

It is indeed a strange mix of loyalties when it comes to guards, soldiers and mercenaries in Mor's End.

Idea: Most foreign 'mercs' must wear peace bonds on their weapons when off duty. However, the local members of the Guild of Guards don't have this restriction. A foreign member must wait 3 years in order to be considered a local member.

Cheers!

So the Guild would mainly be private guards? Makes sense, they would need have more need for some sort of umbrella organization.

Eventually, I want to add the official guards etc to the list of organizations a swell.

In my opinion, the rangers should be controled under the arm of the City Warders, which I figured would be different then the local militia.

Each Warder controls a specific Ward of the city such as the Squats. Thus, the Outlands Warder polices the controled lands of Mor's End.

Just my opinion... the decision is Wizs to make.

Nice work, Conaill.

Boy... keeping up with the various threads is really starting to get hard. Pretty soon... I'll have to start limiting myself to just a couple. ;)

we ended up with the head Ranger on the Council of Warders, and separated them from the military.

sounds very similar to the way I've approached it in the past, with the exception that I've had a singe ruler (usually monarch) to whom the chief warden must answer directly... a Council would work just as effectively, I think...

I know what you mean... because I don't have an assigned long-term task, I've been trying to read all the threads so that I can help out as much as possible (and hopefully not annoy everyone along the way)... but it's getting to a stage where I'm getting dizzy trying to keep up...

*wobbles woozily*

You know, I just read that under the other thread. It true what they say, 'strange minds think alike'. Or something like that.

I've been clicking the cordless mouse so much I killed the battery. I'm addicted now, just trying to keep the threads in order with each other. I started out this afternoon with a 800 man standing army and things just keep chipping away, I bet Alexander the Great didn't have these kind of problems.
