Baltus Starkad

Baltus Starkad is the eldest son of “three finger”Lev Starkad the bowmaker (see City Project Craft & Trade Submissions thread). He is a squad captain in the Castilian’s elite guard. Baltus is a handsome young man in his early 20’s, he is a stickler for military protocol and is never seen out of uniform. He is loyal and dedicated and views military service as his civic duty. He is an outstanding archer with a bright future ahead of him, his father pulled some strings to get him in the elite guard but his rise to squad captain was his own doing. Baltus is single but there is rumor that he has caught the eye of one of the young women at the palace, he hotly denies any such rumors and would never openly do anything to tarnish his family name but the rumors do persist (it is rumored among his men that he may of caught the eye of more than one young lady but doesn’t know what to do with them). The single black mark against Baltus is his younger brother Elias (see below) who is thought of as a troublemaker and a rabble-rouser by the noble families.

Plot Hook.

Baltus has discovered a plot to overthrow Lady Kelvin and has asked his father to help him find local adventurers to aid him in getting to the bottom of this while keeping it quiet. Baltus doesn’t have enough information to go to the Castilian and is afraid of retribution from powerful enemies if he makes unsubstantiated accusations. (See City Project Craft & Trade Submissions thread)

Elias Starkad

Elias Starkad is the younger son of “three finger”Lev Starkad the bowmaker (see City Project Craft & Trade Submissions thread). At an early age Elias took to the streets and local bars, his wild and outlandish ways were a stark difference to his father and older brother, some say he took after his mother (nobody ever said that in front of Lev Starkad). He had a talent for music and weaving tales that soon caught the eye of a traveling bard named Rellagio who took him as apprentice. Elias traveled for many years with Rellagio and soon became an established bard in his own right. When Rellagio was killed under mysterious circumstances shortly after speaking out against several of the silk fish clans, Elias took up his master’s work. He is not as openly political as Rellagio was, preferring a more irrelevant and sarcastic approach. He likes to disguise his statements as parables and moralistic tales of far off countries, if his tales and descriptions happen to match any local nobility or merchants well it was just so much of an odd coincidence. Elias enjoys bars and women and has a reputation as a wild and outlandish character. He is well known and loved by the common people and as equally well known (if not loved) by the upper crust of the city. Deep down Elias is very politically active and believes himself to be a crusader for the common man. Occasionally the wanderlust takes Elias and he leaves Mor’s End for months at a time to travel, but he always ends up coming back home.

Probably the local ratcatcher ;). A couple XP a pop, say 10-20 rats a day... Ok, he might have to switch to dire rats and then alligators in the sewers at some point, but...

Ratcatcher:D

Gronas Stonetooth has been the town ratcatcher for nearly 100 years now, he has been doing this thankless job for so many years most of the inhabatants of Mor's End have forgotten his real name and just refer to him as Ratcatcher. Gronas makes a copper a rat but also hunts strays and other vermin when needed. He is short even for a dwarf and his body is covered in tiny bite scars, his hair and beard are ragged and unkept and his left ear is mangled from a alligator he killed when younger. Gronas has few friends and no family, he shares a small shack with his pony and his two dogs. It is common knowledge that the Ratcatcher keeps a spare dagger in one of his boots and he is not afraid to use it, muggers bring in even more of a bounty than rats do, he is generally left alone to do his job by the more unsavory elements in town.

Plot Hook

There is no place in Mor's End where the Ratcatcher is not welcome, at least when vermin are about. His knowledge of the town and people is quite extensive. He has serviced everything from the grandest palace to the lowliest hovel and has a keen eye for detail.

I would be tempted to give him the "Grizzled Old Fart" PrC from Ambient's "Porthable Hole full of Beer" free PDF. Just because it seems soooo appropriate.

Requirements
To qualify to become a Grizzled old Fart (Old) a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Age: Middle Age or older
Intimidate: 8 ranks
Special: Must be visibly scarred and have a sob story

Since we specified that only PrC's from the SRD are allowed, maybe we can add that as an optional variant? In that case he would be a Com13/GOF5.

Of course, an 18th level NPC also owns 130,000 gp in posessions. Guess he's been saving up those coppers all these years, eh? ;)

One slight problem with this... the population demographics now clearly state that the city's population includes both humanoid and monstrous citizens.

By limiting this thread to PHB races only, we're shooting ourselves in the foot.

A better way to word it is that submissions are limited to races from the SRD, including what's available from the monster sections.

Just a observation...

I made a decision to cut him back from 130,000gp to 650 gp, if he had that much money he wouldn't be sharing a shack with a pony and hunting rats for a living. I guess he spent all his money on a 100 years of alcoholism. He would probably keep a small stash of coins hidden under a board in his house, but 130,000gp that would be hard to justify, that would also mean he had killed in the neighborhood of 13 million rats, I don't think he is quite ready to declare a genocidal war on vermin yet. Of course the idea of a 18th level commoner is pretty nuts to start with but I figured I'd give it a shot.

Perhaps we should wait a while. After a reasonable amt of time, we'll call for submissions for Monstrous NPCs. One step at a time... don't go charging up the steps!

Good idea Krug. I didn't think of that. Perhaps a submitter has [to ask] for special permission at this point if they want to submit a humanoid citizen.

{EDIT}

Blazes, my sentence structure bites right now.

Or we could let them submit and just warn people that if they submit a monstrous NPC, it will be subject to approval from the "authorities".

Just as a reference: the city has about 200 monstrous inhabitants, and only 100 half-elves.

Guilds and Organizations thread is open for business!

Hi all!

Please come check out the Guilds and Organizations thread! It's now open for business.

So far I've populated it with the groups listed by Knightfall in his summary, and a bunch of quotes from "A Magical Medieval Society" (thanks, Suzi Yee and Joseph Browning!) Actual content is still to come ;). I also have 4 placeholder posts for additional groups that can be assigned.

NPCs submitted to this thread will likely belong to some Guilds and Organizations, so do drop on by...
