Maybe for western civilizations/cultures, but remember there are certain cultures on earth which still feel enmity towards others for the wrongs caused by Crusaders and the Conquistadors.
I don't see how that matters to the current discussion - nor d I see how discussion of that will do anything but go into politics and religion, which is not appropriate for this venue.

His point being that the specific number used to denote any given year is arbitrary, because the starting date of any given time line is arbitrary.
The fact that this particular year is divisible by 10 is meaningless, except for the coincidence that your average human being also owns ten fingers.

I know it's arbitrary, however the problem is many people place undue significance on year numbers based on a myriad of assumptions which they believe are relevant (often to the present moment in time).

It matters in that calendars (and all measurements, really) are social constructs.
But, yeah. In general it doesn't really matter. (Edit) Except inasmuch as I have managed to miss the 2012 gravy train. Pity.

For most people the decade came to a close at the end of 2009. And I think that is what is most important if you want to be understood. When people talk about the 90s, they don't normally mean 1991 to 2000. They mean 1990 to 1999. Technically, it may be true that because there was no year zero, decades should be expressed from 1-10 not 0-9, but I can see how it shifted, and it makes sense to adapt to the shift.

It's probably dumb of me to bump this thread so long after the start of the year, but (and by saying, "but" I mean that I don't care if it's dumb) MY first decade started when I was born, or perhaps when I was conceived, if you want to slide back a bit, and, at 41, I am currently in my fifth decade, rather than my fourth. It started as soon as I started being 40.
