Ends Meat (Boddynock Judging)

Ciprinus pats Perkiss in the back. "Come, he can't hurt youy with us here. Let the fool speak more than he should if we get the chance." the druid comments to the others. He follows Leesha, sits at the bar and greets the barkeeper. Heraldo goes down from his shoulders and sits on the bar, where he remains unmoving, blinking slowly. Carpio beggins to climb his master torso, to show his head on the left of the druid's one.

Leesha soon has mugs of ale delivered to all of the party members and introduces thm to the bartender, Annette.

"You folks got business with Fat Sal? He's looking your way a lot, not generally a good sign." Annette says, carefully turning to face away from Sal's table. "Watch what you say by the way, the one that look slike his mother was a stoat can read lips."

Turning to Sarn and Reis and apparently unconcerned about this being "overheard" Annette speaks to Reis and Sarn.

"You boys are mercenaries right? So you must be pretty strong we have a wood chopping competition later, and a darts match, everyone puts in a gold piece or more sometimes and the Tail puts in ten for all the firewood we get out of it - first to split one hundred wins. Darts is darts, but the pots usually pretty decent. Let me know if you are interested and I'll sign you up."

Leesha begins to tell Ciprinus about her ranch, of which she is clearly much enamoured, explaining that she usually spends her weekends there.

Perkiss sips quietly at his drink until a richly dressed elderly woman enters with two younger women flanking her and takes a stool next to him. At which point looking extremely uncomfortable he offers a begrudging greeting.

"Lady Blackhope."

He then stands and approaches Sarn,

"So, going to chop some wood? You'd probably have a decent crack at it, strange tradition, but its part of the places charm I suppose."

Lady Blackhope's small party order wine from Annette and remain at the bar looking curiously out of place in their obviously fine, though relatively understated clothing. The Lady herself could not be called beautiful, but handsome might not be inappropriate, regal might be more so.

Midias and Sarn both catch Lady Blackhope, peering discretely over one of her companions shoulders at Perkiss, her face blank and inscrutable.

Midias will remember the lady's glance, but not speak or act immediatly.

Secretly, he wishes for some undead. Slaying them is a much simpler life.

"Aye," Sarn replies, "I'll try my hand at wood chopping. Used to do more than my share as a young orc when I was with my tribe." A melancholy look passes over his face at the mention of his tribe.

It is not long before a couple of tables are lifted and moved aside, and a couple of cartloads of logs are brought in. As this happens there is a sudden influx of less affluent patrons, clearly working men and women. Gunt Yarman enters towards the end of this looking pained as a thin immaculately dressed man with oiled hair talks animatedly to him.

The carts are set up in full view and a single log is placed upon each of four large polished tree stumps - which were apparently supporting the tables removed.

Several burly men approach Annette to sign up, several of whom she seems to know and she carefully records there names on a small chalk board - which also bears Sarn's name. Annette approaches Yarman and can be seen holding the board out enquiringly, but the big Orc shakes his head and takes a seat waving to Leesha.

Finally after everyone has found a seat and everyone has a drink in hand Annette walks in between the four logs and strikes a small brass gong. She holds up the board and calls out.

"First up in the Bard's Tail's Hundred Log Splitter's challenge, Bulrum Hentwhistle, Gedd Tanner, Jarik Cromwell, and Morgan Briant! Gedd is joining us for the first time since his unfortunate injury, and both Bulrum and Morgan are former winners - Jarik joins us for the first time!" This is followed by good natured cheering and a smattering of applause.

The four men take their positions and each tosses a gold piece into a hat Annette places upon the floor. Smiling Annette produces a small purse and pours ten additional gold pieces in.

The men are each handed a hatchet though some appear to have brought their own and put aside those provided. Annette pulls a whistle waits until all the men are prepared and then blows it, the shrill blast spurring the men into a frenzied motion of chopping.

After ten minutes of each man snatching and chopping logs each is sweating profusely with a stack of split logs at their feet. It is almost instantly clear that out of these partcipants Morgan Briant is the victor, the others being too close to call. The logs are thrown onto a hand cart as the crowd counts, Briant has split 62, Bulrum 52, and the others 48 a piece. There is much slapping on backs and congratulating and the men take their seats and are soon guzzling ale.

During the festivities Yarman taps Sarn on the shoulder and hands him something wrapped in sackcloth. Sarn can barely hear him ovr the din, but the Orc winks and he can just make out, "Stick together,... edge!"

Once Sarn unravels the sackcloth he sees a worn well used handaxe, though it is clearly sharp as the day it was forged. After a few practice hefts he is surprised to find that its balance is perfect - surely the work of a master. Next thing he knows Annette's whistle pierces the noise of the crowd and the next contestants are summoned forth.

"Next up we have Yung Smith, Sarn Irontusk, Mostin Stanz, and our reigning champ Karl "Splitter" Farris! Yung is back for his third try, perhaps third times the charm? Sarn is new so lets make him feel welcome! Mostin continues to maintain his unchallenged title as the worst log splitter in history, and Splitter seeks to take his unbeaten streak to twenty six in a row - which would place him only four victories short of the record held by Bridgend's own Gunt Yarman!"

When Splitter's name is mentioned the crowd goes quiet and there are a few boos from the far corners of the room, a number of eyes turn to a man standing besides Fat Sal's table - he is not especially big, but his does appear leanly wolf-like and mean. When Yarman's name is mentioned there are cheers, and several cries of, "Take an axe!", which the big Orc waves off genially.

The other three contestants move upto the stumps and take their places. Yung Smith is an unremarkable man who wears a determined expression, and Mostin is a thin elderly man wearing nothing, but an loin cloth who is poseing enthusiastically in a muscleman stance much to the crowds amusement - he wears a huge grin and is clearly having a grand old time.

[sblock=Bard's Tail's Hundred Log Splitter's challenge]Okay I changed up the challenge slightly so this is what you need to do...[/sblock][sblock=Bard's Tail's Hundred Log Splitter's challenge]

Roll 50 times - I suggest doing so in units of ten for ease. Roll to hit with a Handaxe, +1 if Sarn uses Yarman's MW Handaxe - you need to hit an 8. Then roll damage, 5 damage is enough to split a log, any less and you must hit it again - crits don't do extra damage since the logs are immune.

Once you have rolled 50 times, count up the number of logs you split - or I can do it if you like. Then simply double this number for your total count. If you finish with the highest count then you win 18gp. You do need to place 1gp in the hat though.

Here is an example of my rolling for the first 4 contestants...

Morgan Briant (1d20+2=4, 1d6+3=4, 1d20+2=18, 1d6+3=6, 1d20+2=14, 1d6+3=9, 1d20+2=15, 1d6+3=8, 1d20+2=3, 1d6+3=7, 1d20+2=14, 1d6+3=8, 1d20+2=17, 1d6+3=9, 1d20+2=13, 1d6+3=6, 1d20+2=17, 1d6+3=7, 1d20+2=7, 1d6+3=5) [/sblock]

Sarn takes a firm grip on his newfound axe and starts chopping...

Roll Lookup

OOC: I think I manage 26 logs cut, fo 52 total. Can you double check, though? And yes, Sarn puts his GP in.

[sblock=Sarn does better than he thought!] You forgot to include your strength bonus garyh, and since you are presumably two handing - most of the contestants are - you cannot fail to split a log if you hit it. I will put my count of your tally in the post later.[/sblock]

The contestants set to hewing wood with avengence, Sarn splits a log with every hit, but so do two of his competitors. Mostin to the crowds delight takes three swings to chop his first log his spindly arms seemingly barely able to lift the handaxe. After ten minutes of swinging as the crowd cheers on their favorite contestants the whistle finally blows and the contestants come to a halt, all covered in sweat with acheing arms, all exhausted.

They sit down upon their stumps as the count is taken. It looks as if Sarn, Yung, and Karl are virtually tied. Then Annette speaks,

"Karl "Splitter" Farris has a total of eighty two logs! Yung Smith ties with Karl! But Sarn Irontusk takes it with ninty logs split!" And the crowd erupts into applause. Sarn finds himself thumped on the back numerous times and a massive stein of ale is pressed into his hand. Annette smiling broadly hands him the hat containing 18gp - 17 of which are new to Sarn.

Yarman moves over smiling and extends a hand,

"Nice job son, keep the axe small price to pay for keeping my record! I wouldn't mind loosing it you understand, but not to that lackey Farris. Keep the axe, doesn't look lke much, but she swings well - bear in mind your not likely to get her true value if you sell her. If you look carefully you'll see she's cold iron, can come in handy in your line of work - trust me."

[sblock=Axe]MW Cold Iron Handaxe, does not appear MW to the eye.[/sblock]

Sarn pockets his money, then takes a long pull on his mug. "Thanks, Yarman," Sarn tells the orc. "I didn't much like the look of that Farris myself. And I appreciate the axe. Strong steel is always of value, even if it doesn't look like much."

OOC Sarn actually has a +4 Str bonus, so even a one handed swing would have to break the log. :)

Seemingly ill at ease in such a large gathering, Reis had retreated to a chair on the outskirts of the room and has been sipping his ale and watching the lute-player speculatively. He comes forward briefly to offer Sarn congratulations after the contest, but wanders back to his chair soon afterwards.
