energy drain question

I am creating notecards for all the rules I don't readily know off the top of my head. I think I have energy drain and negative lvls down pat but if a wight hits you with a successful melee attack do you automaticly just get a negative lvl or do you get a saving throw right then ( I now you get one 24hr. later to see if it's permanent). Thanks

yeah its automatic with no save, but for clarity sake, you dont go and adjust everything instantly. The DMG basically says -1 to all checks, saves, attacks etc.. and 24 hours later if you fail the save, then you go and make permenant adjustments.

a recent character in my group lost five levels after fighting a vampire! talk about a lot of work if he had to adjust on the spot!

Well, actually you do adjust immediately. But adjust to having negative levels.
Losing levels is a different beast, and having negative levels may make you lose levels after 24 hrs.
