Just curious on what the community thinks on this...

We've got a custom race in our homebrew campaign setting that are humanoids. Two subspecies of this race are Large. As you might guess, the party wizard had a field day casting "enlarge person" on this cat-man (basically the "feline" version of a gnoll) and basically causing undue havoc on their enemies.

Is this ability covered by the fact that the race receives a +1 LA due to size or does this warrant a greater LA because a Huge PC is very powerful?

This is why one does not see large humaniods. Enlarge person is a very strong spell for it's level. It's only real balance was large splat races and warforged could not touch it.

The large characters probably should have been monstrous humanoids to prevent such problems.

No. LA doesn't take into account the effects of spells cast by someone else.

In addition:

A gnoll is a monstrous humanoid.

Your custom cat-race is ......<wait fer it!>... a monstrous humanoid. NOT a humanoid.

Problem solved.

Hmmmm...maybe we make the two larger subspecies in this race monstrous humanoids to prevent that problem from arising. Good point on LA not counting for spells..I hadn't even thought about it like that.

Correction. Unless the SRD is incorrect at this location:

http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/monstersG.html#gnoll

A gnoll is a humanoid. A medium-sized one, but humanoid nonetheless. However, I think the inevitability of the "person" spells makes this a no-brainer.

Interestingly enough, there is one (and only one that I can find) large humanoid in the core rules: a werebear in bear form. It really doesn't make any sense to me, but thems the facts.

The Monstrous Humanoid/Humanoid distinction in descriptive terms seems kind of arbitrary. Medusa and Yuan-ti are monstrous humanoids, lizardfolk and gnolls are humanoids. Yuan-ti purebloods can pass for human at first glance, and have very subtle snake-like features, whereas gnolls have hyena heads. MH's tend to have more magical abilities (as well as the better racial levels), though the distinction of what makes a human-looking guy with a couple of spell-likes more "monstrous" than a guy who is obviously a bipedal lizard.

I get the game balance justification behind it, but its an easy point to get confused on.
