ENnies Nominations for 2004

Another thing, I'm REALLY suprised no products by the Game Mechanics aside from their Init Cards are on the list. I really would have expected to see one of their products like Modern Magic or City Quarters on the list.

Read the list.

Thieves Quarter made the cut

Do you consider Dungeons & Dragons and Vampire to be Indie games?
You're obviously trying to make a point, Though I'm not sure what.

Depending on the perspective, it could go either way.

From my perspective, no. D&D and V:TM (or WW in general) are not indie games. They are established games that have had large followings for decades.

They arent Board/Card games either. They are RPG's.

In the last year, i've been introduced to games like Apple to Apple, Caracassone, Settlers, Lunch Money, Puerto Rico, etc etc etc.

While some of these are published by some big companies (Atlas or Steve Jackson) they arent like Monopoly or Scrabble. They arent a household name. They are cult games like D&D and VTM was (and maybe are).

I've been told that some of those games have been out for years, but new games come out every year. Its just my opinion that If and When the Ennies expands, since we're talking about games, that we expand into board games too.

The Ennies is about awarding the best of the best isint it? About the only place I cant see the Ennies realistically expanding too, is PC and Console games.

I'm going off on a Tangent sorry.

I do not see D&D or VTM as Indy games.
I think it would be cool if one day the Ennies expanded into board games.

Ah. Well, all the more reason they deserve an Ennie! :-p (D&D and VTM being the most successfull RPG's in history.)

But really, I've never heard of them till earlier this year!

Tefon: as for City Quarters, my brain farted, I ment Modern Magic and Martial Arts Mayhem. d20 Modern only has one product represented this year, Blood and Fists. I'm dissapointed in not seeing more d20modern products up there thats all.

Games magazine, Spiel des Jahres, and Essen Spiel (Europe's largest Gaming Fair) cover board games a whole lot better than the ENnies ever could.

All of those games would be ineligible for an ENnie this year. They are too old: Apples to apples (1999), Carcassonne (2000), Settlers (1997), Lunch Money (1996), Puerto Rico (2002)

If you are interested in new games, you should pick a website that caters to them. Such as www.boardgamegeek.com. ENWorld is very focused on RPGs. It doesn't even really cover wargaming or LARPing. CCGs are somewhat out of bounds. Board and Card games just seems even further out there when I think about ENWorld. Someone asked about Carcassonne vs Settlers and it was moved from General Discussion to Off Topic. That tells me ENWorld is not the place to discuss, let alone judge, board games.

Actually, PC and Console RPGs would fit better into ENWorld's niche than board games.

It's my opinion that you should remain small and focused UNTIL you become that, and then try to expand outward. There are still many glitches with the ENnies process that need to be ironed out before expansion takes place, otherwise they'll just fold under their own weight like many before them.

I agree with Wil. I'm kind of sad to see the ENnies attempt to expand too quickly and away from its d20 roots. ENWorld is not a general gaming community and unless it is headed that direction, which I'm not seeing, the ENnies should remain a d20 award.

I love the ENnies btw and think the judges do a great job. I made an extra effort to be there on Friday last year to see them. So, please see this as constructive criticism.

I would have picked checkers and chess. Maybe Go. Perhaps Monopoly. Battleship. Chutes and Ladders. Candyland.

You will get a 99%/1% hit rate on Monopoly vs Carcassonne if you ask the average person on the street about games. German strategy games are good. But don't confuse good with popular. (Unless you live in Germany, then perhaps your view is skewed toward these games.)

I'm curious what any of the judges thought about Artificer's Handbook. It didn't get nominated, and I'm just curious, for my own benefit, what you guys thought about it.

As for expanding... I've noticed in the last year indie games have really started appearing a lot. From Munchkin to Carcassone and Settlers... It would be cool if we had an Indie Boardgame catagory.

First I find it very amusing that you use the word "we".

The ENnies are about Role Playing and as far as I know will not ever include CCGs, boardgames, minatures, etc. We (the judges and ENnies personal) focus on the roleplaying and trust me, that's as much work as we really want.
