Enterprise 6-May-03

That was cool. I had a good feeling about this episode coming into it (late season ep + Borg).

About the sheilding: I'm surprised it worked at all. They had no main ship to work from and only scattered parts of themselves. To me, those were not fully functioning Borg. Proto-Borg at best, really. Give them another week and they would have turned Enterprise into scrap metal.

I REALLY liked how they showed the Borg-ified transport and the changes it underwent. It almost made me think that with enough time and parts that it could have become a fully functioning Cube all on its own. It didn't take those 2 semi-Borg aliens long to give Enterprise a quick refit. I would imagine cellular mutation would be just a tad (but still frighteningly fast) slower.

I liked Phlox's reactions to everything. Great performance by the actor. You can tell that while Archer is still good-hearted and wants to do the right thing that he is becoming hardened by all this. That will serve him well with the upcoming plotline which I am fully intrigued by.

Perhaps the early phase weapons are so crude that the frequency fluctuates (somewhat) unintentionally...something the Federation eventually "fixes" as they perfect the phaser...? I've always found it interesting that the sophistocated Borg shielding was never able to protect them from crude forms of attack like being physically struck. Perhaps the Borg are "too clever by half" as they say... :)

Great episode! When I heard that the Borg were coming I thought they were screwing up Trek history, but instead they built upon it. This was also one of the first episodes where I actually felt there was some tension and dread on the ship, which is long overdue given how alone they are in space.

One last comment on the Tech, a Trek novel once pointed out that earlier tech, while crude, was also a lot more powerful as the refinements had concentrated the energy to be less wasteful. Think of Reeds modified phasers as sloppy but very effective.

And just a nitpick.. if the Borg vessel was disabled the boarding party should've (and would've according to prior borg tactics) just taken over enterprise.

Not necessarily. That depends upon their priorities. Also, it's not like the local "collective" was very big, and thus not really bright.

I can buy the "crude phase pistol wavering frequency" version, especially considering the limited mental capabilities of such a small local collective.

The one thing that did not sit well was the small mods to the Enterprise. Nanotech is not replictors, darn it. You can't go *zap* with a few nanoprobes and have it rework that much material that quickly. It simply isn't consistent with their other interation with materials. Darned gratuitous scene.

But, it isn't like it's ever gonna happen on this series again.

exactly! that's why I'd start issuing good ol slug throwers and swords. I mean, it was great watching Picard use a Thompson to mow down the Borg ... heck, it's like the superman complex. The borg won't dodge a phaser attack, but I'd bet they'd duck if someone actually threw the phaser at them. :p

BORING! I glad I only caught the last half hour. I was busy buying wood for the train table.
Ok. It be proven again and again the borg have shields,
(TRIPP is TUBE PULLER ARCHER is TUBE PULLER
sick people)
not all handy in hand to hand, bullets kill them.
What is there still an anti assualt weapon, no sword law still on the federation books?
Yeah we will phaser you out of existance!
we will phaser your head off!
We will cut your head off with a phaser!
but you can't carry Dirty harry's weapon because we are civilized.
The merchant ship is growing by 3% I guess they upgraded the replicators to create stuff.
And once again air goes out an airlock at a different rate.

Next week it looks like I have to decide whether to record the 2nd hour of trek or west wing.

So I take it you didn't like the half-episode you saw. :p

Hey myrdden, I was just wondering what part of the world you live in where these shows come on a day early, for me? I mean Buffy shows here on Tuesday and Enterprise on Wednesday. I had thought they would be that way just like any other main prime time show. So the fact that you have watched these shows a day before they come on for me has intrigued me.

I'm in Edmonton, Alberta. An independant station here picks up a few shows from the US networks and shows them a day before.

No, silly. You don't use slugthrowers on a starship because they put holes in the hull. If the hull is tough enough to not be bothered by bullets, then the bullets ricochet, and become as much a hazard for the crew as for intruders. Either way, you risk hurting the crew as much as you hurt the enemy.
