So it's time for me to start a new every-two-weeks D&D campaign, something that we'll try out for a five-level story arc and see if that satiates or if we want to keep going. Mostly new players, two of whom I've played with once before, one never before, but all co-workers and buddies.
I started by throwing out a list that got up to 32 potential campaign pitches. Little one-sentence things like "Sinbad-style corsairs; Arabian themes and ship as base of operations." These were all over the map; I like themed games, but I also love the versatility of fantasy. Everyone marks the ones they find particularly inspiring.
Now we've narrowed it down to six. Yes, six that everyone really and particularly likes, not six that are "one person really likes it and nobody else does." At last count, the theme campaigns we may indulge in are:
1. Mythic China inspiration; Barry Hughart + Three Kingdoms
2. An "arm of the faith" game with heroes of a given church
3. Renaissance Italian-inspired swashbuckling
4. The weird cultures and bleak stretches of a Land of the Dead
5. The aforementioned Sinbad-inspired Arabian corsair game
6. Astrological story arc: angels and demons of the zodiac, star pacts and Fate
I am damn lucky to have players who would enjoy any of these widely varied games. I may have to roll a d6 to choose.
I'm really looking forward to how their enthusiasm fuels whatever game I run. How about you folks? When was the last time you knew you were looking at a great game ahead as early as the "discussing what the game was going to be about" stage? (I admit I fully expect Piratecat to say "every game I have ever played ever." It's okay, he deserves it.)
