ENworld, a home for 1Eers?

You know, to be completely honest, I'd love to see some talk about actual 1st Edition play.

Arguments about how 1st Edition is the bizwham shiznit Golden Nirvana of All Gaming Experiences get boring pretty fast. If all people ever did around here was talk say to each other, "3rd Edition D&D is AWESOME!" and "Word up, bro! It's the best!" I'd find another forum pretty damn fast.

My general attitude is: don't tell me how awesome your game is. Show me.

Respect is earned, and most of what I've seen so far is a few people starting the same dry argument in thread after thread. That doesn't earn my respect. That earns you a place in my "Zealot: ignore" file.

I agree wholeheartedly. I actually don't know all that much about pre-2e D&D, except that it's apparently more "Real". Or something.

ENWorld isn't a home for 1e players. It's a home for D&D players (and assorted systems ;) ).

The important thing to remember is that although systems can be compared, one is not "better" then the other...so don't even bother going there. Anyhow, lets hope the peace lasts.

That's a really good point. By the way, I have to warn you that there's this guy who's stolen your title and is posting irritatingly inflammatory threads with dumb titles like "So, what was the first product where D&D's soul was sold?"

I realized that it has to be someone using your title, since that poster makes inane comments where he compares 3e nagatively to OD&D and AD&D, as in his first post on that thread:

Yep, UA was the first selling of D&Ds soul for a handful of silver. It was the rapids before the waterfall of what was a post-Gygax 2E world. Unfortunately 3E maintanes this corporate philosophy treating D&D as a commodity with "units sold" being the primary objective rather then functionality itself. Thats why 3E (a novelty based system like 2E) will fizzle out and not have the staying power of OD&D and AD&D IMO. But only time will tell...perhaps we'll see with the release of 4E as the majority of 3E players switch over for the newest and hottest D&D eye candy. ;)

I think you should contact Morrus and let him know what's going on, since that other poster's idiocy might be unfairly associated with you.

Best of luck.

Okay! :D

My primary game is 3.5, but I also run an occasional 1e pickup game... and let me tell you, it's awesome fun! The system is fast and loose, but that's okay; in fact, that's part of its charm. I totally dig it, both for its virtues and as a change of pace. It is an almost completely different game from 3e, similar to the old Battlestar Galactica vs. the new one.

Sooo... my last 1e game, the party of (1st level) adventurers started N1, Against the Cult of the Reptile God. It is a module I'd always had but never run or played through. The party ended up all captured and mostly brainwashed- which was an awesome change from the way, in 3e, it's almost impossible to capture pcs without killing them. Everyone had a blast, though the party pretty much blundered along ineffectually. ;) The change of pace (much faster adventuring, much faster combat, much slower advancement) and the change of systems made it very refreshing.

How's that? :p

ROTFL.

It's also amazing how this spirit of cooperation, such as it is, apparently only extends to EN World's (fairly strictly moderated) forums, not - for example - the 'home(s)' of various "1Eers" wherein 3e, "3Eers" and all associated forces of darkness are with unceasing regularity reviled, insulted and generally unwelcome even in name.

Ah well. :)

Excellent.

It's funny you should mention that, actually.

Cult of the Reptile God was actually the first module I played in 3.0. Our DM has a big collection of old 1st Edition modules, and that was one of his favorites, so we ran it first. That was at the beginning of the longest-running campaign to date.

And yes, our first batch of characters ended up brainwashed and enslaved.

It was great fun.

Shil, we really need to hunt that mimmic down!

My last 1E game (last weekend) resulted in a single giant spider wiping out the entire party (5 of us between 1 and 3rd)!
Talk about a series of lucky bites, and bad save roles. We quickly rolled up some new PCs however, and delt revenge swiftly. We left off underground camped along side a river building a boat from some old barrels and doors. Our DM is a nut for underwater encounters, so I'm sure we'll all be ripped apart by giant creyfish. :)

Yeah. It's definitely the Dragonsfoot population doing all the threadcrapping.

:/
A thread that's consciously created to be almost identical to two ongoing threads is threadcrapped in the very first post.
