enworld project: Spell Compendium Errata.

Steve C suggested that enworld try to write up an unofficial errata list for the Spell Compendium.

http://www.enworld.org/showpost.php?p=3847866&postcount=7

I'd like to suggest that we try to put such an errata together in this thread. When debates arise (how to fix broken spells rather most likely) we could post a poll in this forum and go with majority rules. Some issues might need to be taken to different threads.

I'll try to start on this later in the week, but meanwhile, why don't people at least try to start posting things they think need errata...

I'll start with:

Melf's Unicorn Arrow and Kelp Strand are apparently on the list of clearly overpowered.

I know people have issues with the Orb spells, though I find them just fine.

Combust, at 1d8 fire damage per caster level (max 10d8), no save for damage (touch attack), with a chance to set the target on fire, seems to me to be a bit strong for a 2nd level spell.

Moonbow has a disconnect between the text and the Effect and Duration. Effect says 1d4 motes, Duration says Inst or up to 4 rounds, text says 3 motes.

Effect and Duration need to change to match the text.

Firebrand- the line about putting out the fire is extraneous and should be deleted.

Is it too OT to add spells from sources after the SC? For instance, the horrible and incomplete info in PHBII for the Legion of Sentinels spell? Or is that better in another thread?

That was fixed in the Errata that was released. I think the "Enworld Project" is for spells that weren't changed in the errata.

It might be on par with scorching ray. That spell caps at 12d6, and is ranged. If it is stronger then scorching ray, its not by much. touch spells tend to be a tad stronger then ranged touch because the caster must get within melee to make a touch attack, and thats very dangerous.

Bolt of glory needs something changed. It's a 6th-level cleric spell that does 1d12 per level (max 15d12) against evil outsiders and undead, with half damage to other targets (with a couple good-aligned types that are unaffected). It allows SR, but there's no save. This puts the cleric's damage capability on par with a wizard's, assuming said wizard learns disintegrate. Compare flame strike with most 5th-level wizard damaging spells, and the difference stands out.

In my high-level campaign, the party cleric takes up most of his 6th-level slots (and, I suspect, some higher) with this spell. It's even more dangerous than a high-level disintegrate spell, because that at least allows a save for limited damage.

I have no idea what would be an appropriate change (short of reverting to the version in Complete Divine), so feel free to suggest ideas.

Personally, I think reverting to the version in Complete Divine is fine.
