Epic Greater Magic Weapon spell?

Right, so having an 8th or 9th level spell that offers greater then +5 enhancement or greater then +6 attributes, shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Damn skippy! :) Check out this spell from WotC...emphasis mine

Bite of the Werebear
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 9, Drd 8
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 round/level

You take on certain qualities of a brown bear, almost as though you were a werebear in hybrid form (if werebears had hybrid forms). You gain a +16 enhancement bonus to your Strength score, a +2 enhancement bonus to your Dexterity score, and a +8 enhancement bonus to your Constitution score. Your face becomes that of a bear and your hands become massive paws with sharp claws. These paws burden you with a 25% spell failure chance when you cast any spell with a somatic component (even a divine spell).

You can attack with both claws at your full base attack bonus and your bite at only 2 from your full attack bonus (as if you had the Multiattack feat). The claws deal 1d8 points of damage each (1d6 if you are Small), and the bite deals 2d8 (2d6 if you are Small). You gain the benefits of the Blind-Fight and Power Attack feats as well, and a +7 natural armor bonus.

Material Component: Hair from a werebear.

Yes, and note the extremely short duration of the spell, too. Not to mention that you can't wield weapons with this spell: "your hands become massive paws." Paws don't have opposable thumbs. Plus, it is range personal, so only sorcerers and wizards and druids can do it. And you lose the ability to cast spells because bears can't talk, and paws can't cast spells (see Wild Shape). Wow, does this spell suck.

Besides, both polymorph other and shapechange give you access to this kind of ability enhancement already. Technically, so does the actual bite of a werebear.

I'd say if you want a non-epic spell to grant you this kind of bonus, it should be at most 1 minute/level. Of course, you could just make a Sor/Wiz version of divine favor, too.

There's a reason you don't want nonepic PCs having epic weapon enhancment: epic DR is often xx/+6 or higher.

da chicken - did you read the spell? It's got a specific 25% spell failure chance for the paws, and it would follow that you can therefore cast spells. It would also suggest that having a bear's mouth via this spell doesn't interfere with spellcasting at all, or the spell would have stated so.

I'd say no to creating a non-epic spell capable of producing +6 or better weapons. Unless you're meeting epic creatures, it's unneccessary anyway. What I WOULD like to see is a GMW-clone which allows for flaming/frost/shocking/returning etc etc. enchantments on the weapons produced. Say 6th level, lasts the same duration as lesser magic weapon? Total mods up to CL/2?

Oddly enough, that is the only line of the spell I didn't read. :o

Spell still sucks, though.

Wow. That's very informative. You should write a paper about that. The topic was not if the spell sucked, but whether or not you could grant bonuses from spells higher than the limitations on non-epic level magic items. You can.

Let me reiterate my question: Does anybody have input on the Spellcraft DC to create (and cast) an Epic Spell that grants higher than +5 to a weapon's enhancement bonus?

Lets just assume that I'm not looking for a 9th or lower level spell (for whatever reasons).

Thanks!

The one already posted by HEL Pit Fiend seems fine. The DC should represent the max the spell can do.

How the hell do you figure that?! Did I ever say the spell was good? No. Did I ever say the spell sucked? No. Did I ever ask either one? No. The value of the spell was never in contention.
