Epic: How has it gone?

Now that the ELH has been out for a while, has anyone played in an Epic campaign? How has it been? Was it just a flash in the pan and did everyone get bored quickly?

Sounds like a man either speaking from experience or a prejudice.

I bought Epic Level Handbook for my DM in hope's he would convert our old 2nd Edition game over to it. As it was we found it was too low powered for that campaign, so we are still playing 2nd Ed with that game.

In my own 3rd Edition game we are well away from Epic levels, so I can't comment on how it plays.

Still haven't made it to Epic, but well on our way. Our primary playtest campaign has just moved to Oathbound and the party average is about level 15 now. Just a matter of time...

Yipes!

Let's just say that my buddies and I decided to play a one-shot 30th lvl game to check out what the ELH was all about.

1st rd-- I Gate in 2 solars...they both earthquake the enemy army

2nd rd-- I Gate in 2 more solars...all 4 earthquake the enemy army

3rd rd-- All 4 solars die in a hail of arrow fire.

That's 4 servants of my deity DEAD (being as they were "called" and not summoned.)

None of us are sure if we are going to live or not, let alone succeed in our quest.

*shudder* Bring it On!!!!

lol

More like man wondering if the book is actually useful and the sustainability of an Epic campaign.. :)

I run a converted 2e campaign that has just now incorporated the ELH (the party consists of an Inv23, a Rgr10/Rog10/Clr11, a Bbn7/Rgr8/Brd8, and a Clr13). It's actually pretty good. I doubt that I'll ever use the "super-epic" aspects of the book (i.e. those which accomodate 40th+ level characters), but for "low-epic-level" play, the ELH is a great resource.

The campaign's going quite well, as it always has. Basically, epic play has exactly the same problems that high-level (15th+) play has; lots of insta-kill spells, too many combats that are immediate wins for the initiative victor, and enough use of scrying and teleportation to bring tears to the eyes of a DM who wants to allow his NPCs to be slightly less than insanely paranoid in their choice of defense strategies. The ELH really just maintains these problems (it certainly doesn't solve them), but also adds interesting options to play (I love epic spells, and I'm rather a big fan of the epic feats as well).

Well, I have run one session so far under the epic rules for some converted over 2e characters. A female drow 19th wiz / 2nd fighter; a dwarven 18th cleric of Heironeous / 5th fighter and a human 13th sorcerer / 10th elemental savant (quasi-elemental lightning).

An army of 20,000 scared the pants of them, as did 10 Illithids (even though they went splat before they could act... holy word followed by a cold based meteor swarm... not pretty). Everyone had good fun, and are looking forward to the next chance to play it with great happiness!

I have not attempted a direct conversion of my old 2nd Ed. characters that were over 20th level, and have yet to play with my ELH. Having said that, what is it that was too low powered? I would think the feats at that level would be enough to cover any power issues.

Since Epic came out, we have some characters up to 27 now. I think its the same as in any game, a creative dm can keep high levels interesting, or a bad dm can make low levels just as boring. I think the epic spellcasting is great, and wish it were OGL...
