Re: EPIC=less fun?

The issue at hand is the fact that our favorite, all-star (CR20+) beasties in the MM (and other sources) are all pretty much invalidated by the upcoming EPIC monsters. Yes, I know, now we're gonna have EPIC dragons. Whoopdy-freakin-doo. :o It all gets kinda lame to me.

Invalidated? Hardly so. The ELHB will have rules for advancing the Dragons in MM further, beyond Great Wyrm status, and 'Paragon' tamplates that can make any creature the top of it's race.

And about the poor tarrasque: Don't worry, the poor sucker has a friggin' advancement range in MM. Use that and you're set. But he's still earthbound, and thus can't kill any group of level 10+ that has a half of a brain in it.

I can't understand why people have to rush to make judgements on the book without even waiting for it to come out. It may be great, or it may suck, but we won't really know before it's released. Ok, this last part was unnecessary, since ENBoards lives off of totally prejudiced arguments and their counters. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, and why couldn't it have listed frog's legs as treasure :D .

Somewhere i remember reading (or perhaps I dreamed it up) of a planet/plane where Tarrasques run in heards like the buffalo, while being hunted by an even mightier predator. Anyone know where this is mentioned; a Planescape supplement perhaps?

spelljammer, actually. I forget the name of the accessory, but it dealt with a variety of planets PC's could encounter. The dominant life form of one planet was a creature that was identical in every aspect to the tarrasque.

Oh, the books name was Practical Planetology.

Heh. The Tarrasque turns to PCs confronting it, and intones:
"I have to go now. My planet needs me."

Invalidated

Wolfspider/Numion:

By invalidated, I mean that the ELH monsters will totally reorganize the present D&D "food chain". That's something I don't like. A Great Wyrm Red Dragon should be the greatest adversary on the planet. Yet he will be fish food among the sharks of the ELH. Even the gods would be humbled by some of the EPIC monsters. Did you see the Sphinx in the newest Dragon Mag.? Unbelievable. That thing could take apart the entire Greek pantheon...until we see Epic Zeus.

Numion:

I understand that the book is not out yet, but the existing "teasers", esp. the newest Dragon Mag., provide enough information for me to make a judgement. I'm entitled to my opinion just like you.

Perhaps (and hopefully) the ELH has some excellent sections on how to rectify the problems I have forseen. i.e., how the heck do we integrate this power influx of EPIC creatures/heroes into our existing campaign power structures? How do we rationalize it, in game and out of game?

Has it ever struck anyone that a lot of these epic critters could be OUTSIDERS?

The monsters, therefore, are usually contained in their little planes, and only rarely get unleashed onto the world. They could be the destruction of cities, of countries, but then they're smacked down or sent home.

Equally, some of these suckers are like the Big T. They're locked away, and not let out. ELH probably deals with Semi-deity stuff, people like Hercules, or stuff like that.

Now, where are the Epic Oozes and Vermin, huh? ;)
