Epiphany!: New use for spam in gaming

You need to get a mail program with "adaptive" or "boolean" filters. I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird, and although it's only at version 0.3, it has robust spam prevention, wonderful adaptive filters, and a nice spellcheck.

Anyway, the point of the adaptive filters is that you can train the program to figure out what's spam and what isn't. When I first turned mine on, it thought everything coming from the reply notices was junk. But, after I marked them all as "not junk", it learned that emails with the "thread has been replied to" format from ENWorld weren't junk. It hasn't junked a single one of them yet.

Yesterday I was reviewing the list above looking for an NPC name. I was thinking about going with Fazad Sham before considering that the party might not find him credible with that name.

I ran a Star Wars Game last year where the players had to interact diplomatically with a Minister by the name of Lyarr. The hemming & hawwing "metagaming" that was going on in the players' minds was plainly visible. You could almost see them thinking, "did Henry... nah, couldn't... be?"

Actually, if sinister names were enough to make somebody a bad guy then one of the characters in our previous campaign should have been killed on sight by the rest of the party: Malhavoc Shadowlord.

My character in that campaign, a witty halfling rogue, said to him early on, "If you ever get to be a powerful wizard, that's going to be one hell of a name you've got there. Until then, it's just going to be a pain in the ass to carve on your tombstone."

In a twist of irony, Malhavoc WAS killed by a fellow party member when the barbarian got Dominated. Good times.

Heck, I have uses for Spam (the original meat product) in gaming. It makes wonderful Paranoia food...

Spam in the place where I live (ham and pork)
Think about nutrition, wonder what's inside it now (oh boy)
Spam in my luchbox at work (it's the best)
Really makes a darn good sandwhich any way you slice it at all
