The novel Eragon by that Paoilini guy is freaking amazing!
I couldn't put it down.
I suggest you guys and gals check it out.
It's basically about this world where an evil dragonrider wipes out all the good dragonriders, and is trying to take over the world. Now a new generation of riders is being born, and they have to be trained, and decided which side to fight on (there's actually three or more sides to this epic war.)
All in all it's a very good Part 1 of a three book series that focuses mainly on Man vs Self and Man vs Nature.
Plus I adore the dragons personality.
In game terms, the Magic System reminds me more 3.0 Psionics.
And there aren't any halflings or gnomes.
