D&D 5E (2024) Essential Fighter’s Handbook

50 subclasses sounds excessive to me 😅 … but if you care to do it, I guess you can knock yourself off!

Personally, I find subclasses a bit limiting, and I would prefer seeing more content that many or any character can take: backgrounds, feats (including fighting styles please!), spells, magic items… these are more fun to combine, and do not require committing to a big multi-level trajectory as subclasses do.

In terms of magic items, I think it’d be cool to introduce some kind of "slowly growing artifact". You know, the kind of plot device that could let Arthur pull Excalibur out of the stone on the first adventure, carry it through to the end of the adventure, but without being overpowered. Something like: the + to attack and damage equals half your proficiency bonus, and maybe it gets some extra powers unlocked along the way (e.g. when the bonus increases, or at other levels in-between).

Even though I am not the audience for this, I don't think there's any harm to this, but I would like to ask that if you add A5E and ToV rules, that you also maintain 2014 compatibility as well with those. I know a bunch of people that are still happy playing "Old School 5E".

I will refrain from contributing to the "Martials need more options blah blah" debate because I feel like this horse has been beaten off to a pulp at this point. I think if you make such a book, absolutely aim it at the most hardcore base possible. Most "normie" players are already plenty engaged remembering their bonus actions and talking to dragons.

2e Fighter's Handbook was one of my all-time favourites - so inspirational.
As a kid I would read that handbook a lot and just imagine - an all-fighter campaign - Cavaliers, Gladiators, Myrmidons, Noble Warriors, Peasant Heroes, Savages...etc
The Tight and Broad Groups were a thing of beauty.
It themes were more captivating to me than the actual math.

I remember someone made a 5e (2014) version of it some years back and posted it on Enworld. Pretty decent content.
These days I'm rather content with what we have and so I tend to just tailor things for our setting and for internal consistency. Also I'm a bit odd in that I'm enjoying the exploration of high-level these days.
So I'm not the target market, but exciting stuff for young players who enjoy the class and perhaps may find love in a Fighter's Handbook as I once did.

So, we had a meeting yesterday and we’re probably going to do this. Right now we’re costing it up and making plans, so it’s not officially greenlit quite yet, but if I were a betting man I’d put money on us doing this later this year.

It will be 2024-based, specifically.
