50 subclasses sounds excessive to me
… but if you care to do it, I guess you can knock yourself off!
Personally, I find subclasses a bit limiting, and I would prefer seeing more content that many or any character can take: backgrounds, feats (including fighting styles please!), spells, magic items… these are more fun to combine, and do not require committing to a big multi-level trajectory as subclasses do.
In terms of magic items, I think it’d be cool to introduce some kind of "slowly growing artifact". You know, the kind of plot device that could let Arthur pull Excalibur out of the stone on the first adventure, carry it through to the end of the adventure, but without being overpowered. Something like: the + to attack and damage equals half your proficiency bonus, and maybe it gets some extra powers unlocked along the way (e.g. when the bonus increases, or at other levels in-between).
