Eulogize your favorite slaughtered sacred cow.

I stand here today to bid farewell to our departed friend the halfling halfling. That lovable scamp who, along with elf and dwarf, was both a class and a race. The simplicity of it was beautiful.

"What are you?'" we'd ask.
"I'm a halfling." he replied.
"No, what do you DO?" we'd venture again.
"I'm a HALFLING!" he'd say again (while stealing our coin purse).

Ah, good times indeed.
Rest in peace peace, my friend.

Goodbye Chaotic Nuts, er Neutral. You won't be missed. Half Orcs, Druids, Bards, Barbarians and Monks and probably Sorcerer are just on vacation, so you get no eulogy. Gnomes are in the MM, here's a beer for your boys to drink over the corpse of Lawful Neutral, the alignment w/the second biggest stick in his....the mud. (see I can play nice)

Many things mentioned here may have been turned to ground round by the new edition, but still exist (and always will) at my table.

That said, I'm sad to see the rules-as-written demise of:

*Polymorph self/other (it worked *fine* in its 1e version)
*Hobbit-like halflings
*Illusionists
*Round fireballs (whether expanding or not)
*Line effects (whether bouncing or not)
*Random encounter tables
*Random hit points
*Random lots of things, come to think of it. Life is random; the game should follow suit
*Magic item mystery
*Chaotic neutral - the alignment choice of entertainers everywhere
*Non-right-angle maps - the new rules choke on one room being at a 45-degree angle to another
*Ultravision and infravision - night sight with a rationale that made sense
*Ranged "light" that can be cast on eyes to blind target
*Heavy tank Rangers as a viable option
*Wild magic and-or magic not behaving as it is told to (does 4e have a Wand of Wonder equivalent?)
*Wacky but useful magic items e.g. a +1 spoon of protection
*Cavaliers and-or Knights - the shining armour empty head brigade
*Critical hits that could occasionally do something spectacular
*Resurrection and system shock survival tables
*Clerics turning undead tables - still the best system out there for this
*Loss of a point of Con. on revival from death
*Gary Gygax and his wondrous use of words

On the other hand, life is random, isn't it nice to be able to count on some things working? Like Magic Missle always...wait WHAT!? Oh well, I can always just make a Bard and sing myself to sleep...hmm. :) I'm sure a lot of people find the removal of certain things from the game random. Glad they could help you achieve randomness in your game :)

The other 3 were pretty much gone w/3E (or earlier, at least from the pages of actual D&D books for Gary). Yes I know you meant his passing, not his writing for D&D.

Fare thee well limitless magic spells.
* When the book was new and at 22nd level Magic Missile was still the most powerful spell in the game. (no damage caps on magic spells)
* When Dimension Door allowed a well placed backstab at over 500 yds.
* When Lightning Bolt could be cast at a distance behind a closed door in a 30' x 30' room annihilating everything within.
* DM retribution by striking characters with 1 million, 1 millionth HP Lightning Bolts incurring only 1 hp of damage, but forcing 1 million saving throws for each piece of equipment. (No damage reduction factor to account for)
* Halflings with round bellies and hairy feet.
* Gnomes with a purpose
* Druids, just because they were freaking cool.
* The Grand Master of Druids - There can be only one!
* Alignment - how will I know when to punish a player for acting ignorant.

Neophyte 1st Level Characters

Goodbye, my friend, whose great destiny lay far ahead of him, barely visible from the lowly place from which you began. Goodbye farm boy who took up his father's sword. Goodbye apprentice who seeks to avenge his master. Goodbye urchin caught up in events beyond his imagining. Goodbye Rand al'Thor. Goodbye Eric and Roo. Goodbye Frodo. You rise to greatness from nothing will be sorely missed.

All I gotta say is I don't want any of you all to say my eulogy.

"We are gathered here to remember Ken, beloved father and husband. Goodbye and good riddance, let you never rear your ugly, broken face again!"

;)

Fare ye well Wish, for you are beyond your own power now.

And seek not "The Deck of Many Things", for it shall not be found.

Well, I'll miss bizarre criticaling weapons. Nothing is more exciting that rolling multiple d12s and realizing that your power attack also gets multiplied.

And goodbye obscure list of weird items in the dmg. Especially apparatus of kwalish. Its the one artifact item I really wanted to find.
