There are some really nice folks playing EVE, but as with any MMO you get your muppet contingent too. It is however a very good game IF you like PvP, if like me you prefer the PvE and Crafting side of things then sooner or later you will run into a brick wall with EVE as eventually you have to go low sec in order to get the materials to keep crafting (unless you want to pay the typically exorbitently greedy prices set by players as per usual MMO style) and once your low sec, if you stop for any period of time you going to get taken...taken hard and without lubrication

And very few will just take you down to a pod..most will pod kill also..and dying soon becomes REAL expensive.
There are some fairly huge Corporations of players in the game that have PvP'ing down to a fine art, I had some arrangements to function unharrassed (even protecteD) in low sec with one of the larger pirate corps in exchange for a % of my mined ore per trip. And I had some fairly enlightening conversations with them on thier pvping and they have it down as I say to a fine art, they miss little and thier is a heck of a lot of fine tuning, technique to it that the tutorials etc..dont even come close to hinting at. I was quite frankly, amazed at how involved and specialised thier process for scanning, identifying, and engaging targets was and what equipment your ship mounts makes a huge difference.
However as I say, if you not into pvp though then you REALLY need to steer clear of low sec systems (Except for passing through, as pvpers generally only attempt to take folks who linger), and that means being only so much you can do (plenty of random missions, or player created delivery contracts, though be sure to check the security rating of the start and end points and the systems you'll need to pass through to reach it before accepting), and especially if you want to craft then eventually you just cannot function in anyway that makes money, because you need low sec minerals and you cant get them yourself without risking the expense of losing a ship and all its gear.
Also beware of a certain contingent of scum bag that take out a low inexpensive ship and then put some tempting items in it (heavy missiles etc...) or other valuable gear, while one low level shuttle or other unintimidating vessel sits far away seemingly innocently going about its busines,s but is in fact keep a close eye on who loots the wreck.
As the intent is to draw people in to loot the wreck, which once they do they alert the battleships or whatever that are typically waiting one jump away, who then appear and blow said looter to smitherenes, netting them a safe pvp kill and whatever gear they can salvage from that players ship. Yup, it is a crafty (and despicable) method for pvp'ing in the safety of high sec space with no risk to themselves at all. I cannot count the number of times I saw people falling for this and getting mobbed by groups of smug (no doubt 10 year olds) patting themselve son the back and thinking they've been clever.
Anyway the by and large of it is, if you like PVP then EVE is an awesome game with heaps to offer, but if you are more PvE or dont like PVP at all then this game only has so much to offer before it becomes untenable to advance much further into some of the more interestign aspects of the game. (player made and run stations for example... can only be made in low sec, making them preyed on by every pvpers who lays eye on them, exploration, have to go low sec to do it makign you prey for every pvper, crafting eventually need low sec ores making you prey for every pvper etc..etc...the list goes on).
I would also add that EVE is not a very sociable game particularly,
unless you join a corp. Otherwise the most player contact you will have usually is the odd rare exception who likes to chat or talking via the various channels, where mostly you will be ignored as you have try to follow a conversation through a monotony of mixed conversations and general nonsense that would be better off left to private chat.
I enjoyed EVE though not being a PVP'er in any regard nor having interest in that aspect eventually it just played out interestwise for me. Well, that and the scandal where one of the Devs was caught out giving the best blueprints form the Research lottery to hiw own friends (seriously not on).
