Exploring the Hase-Suna Complex (Manzanita judging) [Concluded]

Everybody enjoys a little red wine, and also spills quite a bit, as the container was not designed for drinking out of.

Payne opens the canister marked PP and finds dried peas.

To speed things up, are you going to open all the others in turn?

Payne finds no traps on any of the canisters. All seem to have some sort of common form of food or drink:

PP -- peas
BL -- barley
W -- red wine
SP -- something powdery, not immediately clear what
WW -- white wine
AB -- ale
LF -- flour
MS -- dried mushrooms
FR -- more flour
S -- salt
C -- cinnamon
BH -- honey

Kyle sets to gathering up the containers "Be careful with that" he cries as Payne not-so-gently plops a jar on the floor "Don't tip it out" he flusters as Kol tips some powder onto the floor "This stuff may be all that goes into your belly over the next few weeks" he says as he starts to carefully pack the vessels away in his backpack.

"Speaking food, it must just about be time for a meal break eh?"

``I must say, Kyle, its a pleasure to have you along.. at least now we don't have to roast up Lizardman.`` Truth spoken there. Payne may not have ever been happier to have someone along.

Lokin continues to eye the hallway suspciously, yet he smiles when he hears about a meal.

"I'm not surprised to have seen the rats. They love places like this. But living dead abominations this time. Lizardmen last time. What's going on in here?"

Lokin checks the rats bites that got through his boots, carefully flicking away any rat-parts that got stuck to his armor and equipment.

Well, says Zurd as he starts gathering up some of the less squished rats by their little tails...

As I gather our diner I will ponder this question Lokin...

I am thinking that when the old occupants died from drinking the wrong potions at the wrong times based on their lack of a competent labeling system they left behind some staff and what not.

These stalwart few being loyal to their masters decided to stay on and maintain this place in all its splendor. Well they were so attached to it that they were able to cross into undeath to protect what was left of their masters supplies. Some copper and silver coins a potion, two scrolls and some small cans of foodstuffs. Oh and that shield there...unless it was carried in by someone else.

Once they became undead they lacked the intellect to turn the knobs on the door and were trapped here in this storeroom.

Heres where it gets tricky...

Later perhaps some lizardmen come in and decided this was a good place from which to raid the travelers on the road nearby. Its out of sight underground and relatively off the beaten path. It is associated with boggey men
<looking at Kongu> unless I am mistaken of course madam. Making it an ideal hideout for real boggey men.

The orcish voice is a mystery to me, unless the orcs have run the lizardmen off after our first attack on the place weakened them significantly. We didn't hear the orc until after the big fight in the halls, so that seems plausible.

As for what awaits us....

Orcs, being opportunists could have killed or enslaved all the remaining lizardmen, taken what they could, eaten the remains and left for greener pastures. They may well have encountered the zombies in this room and fled fearing some kind of sickness for it is a common orcish story that the bite of a zombie can make one turn into one in due course. The removal of the head is the only way to make sure the creature stays dead - speaking of... Kol be a good man and remove those heads if you would for the sake of us all. Who knows if those tales are true?

Perhaps the orcs are still here or even worse perhaps the orcs and lizardmen could have a loose conspiracy to raid the traveling caravans and travelers on the road which means they probably have effective and relatively smart leaders nearby. That would be bad for us - bad indeed.

Then I guess it could all just be some sort of random setup; simply a mix of random doors with random challenges and rewards created to test us somehow. Might be its sole purpose is to facilitate our growth into seasoned adventurers for some nefarious purpose later on. Imagine if you will, a sort of filler to take up our time while we grow into our potential and can take some bigger joint undertaking with far reaching goals and rewards or dire consequences for failure. Fame fortune - all that stuff there!

Or, or, or...

Sorry, sort of got caught up there....

Well...someone else have any ideas?

Kongu laughs. "Yes, I'm sure the builders knew that my friends would stumble on the entrance randomly, and that I would then get you all to come join me in exploring it. All done for our benefit, no doubt.

"Seriously, I think what we're seeing are pieces of two different histories. The original inhabitants, and the current inhabitants. How much of the place is clearly not being used as intended? The deserted guardpost at the entrance, the food in the kitchen being all moldy -- while this stuff has kept well in sealed canisters. The wine is fine; but wine undisturbed for thirty years will do well. The shield was abandoned: a magic enchantment that the lizardfolk seemed to know nothing of, behind a door in a room occupied only by vermin.

"But these zombies -- which history do they belong to? Were they here when Hase and Suna dwelt in these corridors, or are they more recent arrivals?"

Kyle scratches his head pondering the words of his companions "I'm not much of one for history" the fat dwarf says "unless, of course, it is culinary history" he sighs, a look of pleasure crossing his pudgy features. "Speaking food, keep your eyes peeled for anything that looks edible, this place is starting to inspire me. I can feel a feast coming on tonight" he chuckles brandishing his symbol of Geoth and planting a slobbery kiss on it.

Well, Madam you have a good point where did the zombies come from?

I suppose they could be abandoned servants like I said before or they could be a group of adventurers much like unto ourselves who were "changed" by some profane new occupants.

I know it is not uncommon for orc shamans to keep a skeletal servant around I am sure it is much the same for lizardmen. I suppose they have intellect enough at least on par with my coarser kin.

I think the only way we are going to find this out fair folk is to scurry on and check the halls much as the rats we are about to eat.

Handing a string of Rats (20) to Kyle....

These don't seem to have been smashed as much as the rest...

What can you do with them - crap sakes rat roasted on a stick isn't half bad my tribe used to subsist on that alone during the bleak winter months. Well, until we started drawing straws among the lower ranks but that is a story for another time.
