Really, just what is this game about? What is the object?

I dunno if it is the same, but I did happen across a forum board that was for some kind of role playing game (larp?) that seemed to be about confessing your deepest darkest secrets and completely way-out-of-the-spectrum/fringe politics. It seemed to be some kind of dystopian future setting maybe? I think it had the word State in the title...Anybody give me any insight?

I hope your not referring to a|State, which is a sublime game and cannot be mentioned in the same sentence--nay, the same thread--as TGTSNBN.

The amount of thought, time, and careful research
Except that most of the "careful research" is actually false and is based on current stereotypes and misconceptions of the time period FATAL is supposed to be tackling rather than facts, as the author claims.

Well then, you might want to glance over this review:
Note: There's a link to something called "tubgirl" in this review. Unless you really, really like feces, I'd strongly recommend not clicking on the tubgirl link. I'm serious - experience indicates that curiosity tends to hurt most people, here.

FATAL strikes me as the product of a couple of horny college guys' imagination. It's not a game so much as just a bunch of random crunchy bits. I haven't read all of it, but there's no premise, no hook, no justification for the "setting" - assuming there is one. Just gobs of tables and charts, and offensive bits designed to perform random lewd acts on unsuspecting NPCs. There's that, and then you get things that are actually kind of worthwhile, and well-researched, like the table of every conceivable phobia known to mankind, and the table of (unfinished) 10,000 random magical effects (aside from the XXX-rated effects).

All in all, it's an utter pile of filth.

Ah, yes. Fortunately for all the world, tubgirl has been permanently cleansed from the net… So there’s no need to worry about that sanity-obliterating link anymore. Just skip past it and get to the rest of the review.

Aus_Snow and Nomad4life: I have both gone to the website, read the whole FAQ, introduction and went through the rule book which IMO is probably more than any of you did. It is stated EVERYWHERE that the game is not about orifices sizes. It's all there for sake of completeness. They claim that most rules contained within are useless (more or less). They claim to provide a simulator, which IMO is the blandest thing around. It has a Sin City set in medieval times feel IMO.

When I first saw that movie, I realised how much D&D was uptight in the sense that the evil guys aren't exactly evil except on paper because most gamers feel that having them do truly evil things is considered poor taste or innappropriate gaming material. IMO that's the whole point behind book of vile darkness (which is a bit sissy in it's evilness IMO). IMO fatal tries to portray evil in the most realistic/barbaric/primal urges-like fashion which is a legitimate gaming genre IMO. It does not interest me but I can see people being dran to it.

I mean what viking invasion in history did not involved rape? I think that's their point. They sacrifice political correctness for the sake of realism which in itself should not be shocking IMO. It's shocking to people who look at the book supperficially and are shocked by the images that suggest that sex encounters are the most proeminent feature of the game. I believe it's not the case the the strong emphasis done to it is probably to scare off people to whom they don't want to sell the game to. It is also of my opinion that these feature are not meant to be used by the protagonists. They are to be victim of it or saving victim of it. Rampaging gnolls, trolls eating childrens, etc like, as they claim "real" mythology.

I still think it's a tremendous waste of time. Waste of time creating such a game, waste of time to play it. But it is not shocking. Appalling rather is the proper word.

>shudder<

I remember when I finally gave into temptation after reading a thread here and checked out that review. And I finally couldn't resist- I had to download the demo version of FATAL and check it out (I got the second acronym, but whatever).

Gahhhh... worst move evar. It's the only game that I've read part of and wished I hadn't.
