Faerie Fire & Hide in Plain Site

First Post
Does Fairie Fire keep you from using Hide in Plain Site (as per the assassin ability)? Does it keep you from hiding if you only have cover and not complete cover?

This situation came up and we looked at the spell, what the RAW was, what the intent was and we even compared it to Glitterdust which states there is a penatly to Hide (unlike FF).

As a group we just can't seem to come to a consensus. How would you rule this?

By the RAW: No effect. FF does not list a penalty to Hide, nor does the SRD state that it prevents Hiding. According to the description, all it does is eliminate concealment bonuses.

Common Sense: Wait- what am I thinking? This is EN World.

It's a tough call. Faerie fire does negate concealment caused by darkness, so you can't "hide in shadows" with it up. For Hide in plain sight you don't need concealment, so I'd say you are fine.

DM could rule that Hide in plain sight is "a similar effect" to invisibility though, which is stated in the spell as being overcome by faerie fire.

My question would be "Can someone Hide In Plain Sight while holding a lit candle above his head?"

Then my answer to the Faerie Fire question would be the same.

You're usually for a strict reading of the rules regardless if it makes sense or not. Why a change on this topic?

What change?

If your reading of the rules says someone can hide with a candle on their head, I'd say that the same reading would permit them to hide while Faerie Fired. If your reading of the rules says someone cannot hide with a candle on their head, I'd say that the same reading would preclude them hiding while Faerie Fired.

I think I would rule that it is similar in this respect to glitterdust (-40 penalty to hide), except that faerie fire also prevents concealment from darkness as the spell description says.

Right, I guess you weren't really going either way on that one. I apologize for my assumption.
