False identity theft?!

Someone else uses the name Aeolius on YouTube, Yahoo, Skype, and a handful of other social media sites, even though I have been using the name since 1985 (AppleLink:PE, pre-AOL).

Also, there is a famous actor in current movies that uses my name (I am older).

That being said, I am also know to answer to "Hey, you!".

Are you sure you're you? How are WE to be sure you're really you?

Hmm.. Good question. If we assume identify theft refers to using my name in other places, rather than illegally accessing my accounts, then the age of my account here should shed some light on it.

From there, one could track the email address to me, and from there, verify that i do indeed posess the original files for my old campaign website, and floppy disks with my PC in Word Perfect, and possibly even the original AppleWorks format.

My old web-site files could be cross-checked to the Internet Archive and verified as having belonged to me by virtue of the original URL path.

Now, if my account here has been hacked, I reckon that would still require an admin here to look into it to check certain facts.

I'm pretty sure I am me. And that I made up my full name 20 some years ago.

The "Janx" handle unfortunately has been claimed on a few systems. I've had to resort to using my full name for xbox live for instance.

I'm single...and have never been to Asia, so I'm safe.

Yeah, Dan, but as the Man in the Funny Hat said, how do we know that you're you and not the international porn star?

By the way next time you're in Asia avoid Singapore. They play rough over there. ;)

No, I'm serious. Stay away from Singapore.

I've been informed of an odd conundrum. Apparently, somebody is using my fake name on facebook.

Janx, you know there may be a good invention/design/business idea that could come outta this. imagine setting up fake identities (Electronic or Informational Cover-Identities) that could run parallel to a person's real identity on the Nets/Webs.

It would be a Preemptive Defensive Security Profile. It would have enough real information to run parallel to a person's real ID but would have fake accounts, pass words, etc. But it would be far more vulnerable (intentionally) to cracking than a normal account, and the account would be set to run on a loop and tracking server so that it would simulate activity on a regular basis. It would look far more active than most "real accounts," and that would be one of the bait draws. Professional Crackers and Identity thieves, especially international ones, such as Russian ICCs, would see the far more active fake/parallel account, find it easier to crack, and would tamper it instead of the real account.

People could pay for the service, which would be Active Identity Defense (for the average person) rather than systems in vogue now, which are Passive/Reactionary.

For that matter active systems could be tied directly to tracing and tracking programs so that when they are hit some idea can be gained as to who the perps are and their possible operational location. The same could theoretically be done to protect not just financial data, but even things like Fictional but nevertheless valuable Electronic and Income producing Identity Profiles (such as Second Life accounts).

If you think the idea has merit then contact me and I'll be happy to work on the project with you as a business venture. You could handle the basic software design requirements, I would handle the security aspects and some of the informational profile designs. Together we could handle the overall system design and business plans.

Actually I can see such systems being sold not only to the general public, but more advanced versions being sold to the military and Intelligence agencies (though they already have some capabilities in these areas that I know of - but from what I know there is no coherent method, just a bunch of ad hoc procedures).

Let me run the idea by some buddies of mine in the military and in government contracting and see if the government would have an interest in the idea as active Cyber-Defense. If not there is still the general public, who would probably go for it (at least at the corporate and higher end client level) as an active cyber-defense for tectonic and financial identities.

Well, I'm off today and have some other things to do.

If you're interested let me know, if not that's good too.
Whatever you decide.

I'm sure no-one uses my name. And no, I'm not going to check. I am that sure of it. Yes, sirree. Original, that's my name. No, wait..

People have used characters I've created for various campaigns or stories for their characters on an MMO. Sorta flattering?

I've also had characters I've created be used among probably close to a hundred other published D&D character/NPC names as sockpuppet identities for one of the major, longterm vandals on wikipedia. Not sure I want anything of mine used that way.

Mind you, there's some irony in my complaining about anything like this. Because Ray Vallese created Shemeshka the Marauder. And then I come along, some random kid new to playing D&D, and I not only adopt the character's name as an online handle, but I freaking spell it wrong. And then end up writing in the industry too.

If I ever meet Ray, I owe him a beer.
