Familiar dies and is raised. Penalty for the mage?

To the best of my knoweledge, the answer to that particular question isn't anywhere official. If you're the DM, that's how it goes; an entirely reasonable interperation, too.

If you just use the standard Reincarnate tables, and let it stay a familiar, it could lead to some truely atrocious puns at the table, though, as well as some interesting role playing situations.
