Fane of the Drow - an ongoing review - Major Spoilers!

Merric, I did not notice you mentioning the Hook entries for the main creatures.

Each NPC, at the end of its description, has a "Hook" entry that describes its motivations and/or behaviors. Without using an actual one, something like: "Desperate to make a reputation, will take chances to take down a challenging enemy."

Wait, is this just a book with maps, or do actual minis come with it? If it included minis, that'd be great. It'd be like the equivalent of Magic's preconstructed decks.

Nope. Minis do not come with it. You'll have to get those from your usual sources.

There will be another DDM-skirmish legal map in Dragon #337. The Wardrums starter will have 4 maps in it, like this product.

Cheers!

Hmm, have there been DDM-skirmish maps in Dragon before? I want those.

There have been none that will be legal with the new rules. Issue #337 will be first of that sort.

That said, checking my slightly out-of-date Dragon DDM article list, I find that the Dragon's Hoard map came in issue #322.

There was previously four photocopiable tiles in issue #313, and an actual terrain tile (Mushroom tangle) included with issue #316.

A recent Dungeon magazine (#126) has a mini-scaled map for one of the encounters in the mag, but it isn't big enough for a fully-fledged DDM skirmish.

Cheers!

Cheers!

How many hours of game time did the adventure take?

Also, is the new FR adventure Sons of Gruumsh designed in a similar format to Fane of the Drow (mini maps, short-combat focused module, etc?)

I've only run two sections of it so far (Mithral Mines and the Tomb of Queen Peregrine). Each took about 90 minutes. So, in all, about 6-7 hours for the entire thing, I think.

Sons of Gruumsh (my review) is a traditional adventure, although every monster is given a suggested miniature. Sons of Gruumsh is incredibly densely written; it'd probably take 3-4 sessions if not more.

Cheers!

They really need to get someone who knows the 3.5 rules to check the stat blocks, especially on a module so combat focused. First goblin in there contains two major errors. First the mw Greataxe does 1d8+1 damage where as a small Greataxe should do 1d10, and the mw composite shortbow does 1d6+1, but a small one should do 1d4.

I see someone else caught some of those errors.

The drow wizard is listed as a CR 6 when he should probably be a CR 5 (wizard 4 levels + 1 for drow CR).

The CR on the monsters is supposed t obe lowered one to account for their poor equipment but they have a bit of masterwork stuff and even some magic items!

I've run the first two maps so far and was annoyed by a few things.

1. The dwarf set up. No names are provided for any dwarves who might be doing the hiring. In addition, unless I glossed over it, no guidelines on how much treasure the dwarves would offer the players is provided.

2. The description of the rooms/monsters. Sometimes there is an elaborate description except for the thing getting ready to eat your face! Second thing is that for some monsters that they included in the book for stats, they provide NO description at all. Bad WoTC! No cookie for you. I was looking at the Draegoth and wondering... is that the thing from Lords of Darkness? Gee, wish I had that book with me now!

3. The selection of miniatures includes material from the very first set, as well as from a set that's not even out yet! Argh!

The important thing though is that the group is enjoying it.
