Fantasy "biotechnology" and other alterations

Chaositech is probably a good book to take a look at - it has mutations, and items that your characters can incorporate (i.e. replace other parts) into their bodies.

What, no love for Chaositech?

Though I will add it to the OP for the purposes of completeness, no. I find Chaositech (and Dark Space before it) to be one of the absolute worst rpg books with mutations. Some of the other material is mildly interesting, but the much maligned 6th edition of Gamma World has more diversity and usefulness in terms of mutations.

Philip J Reed, of Ronin Arts (and other) fame, posted a free PDF. . . called "Genhancements", I believe. It should be here on EN World, somewhere, still. I'm having trouble tracking it down right now.

You won't find it here anymore- Phil left rpgnow/drivethru/enworld when the new conditions for companies was announced. His work is on his own site, e23 and, IIRC, a couple of the much smaller pdf stores. I will add this to the OP, along with the one he was selling.

Not EXACTLY what you're looking for, but in a close vein...

There's some fanatastic stuff you can plunder from the AD&D Dark Sun supplemnet "Psionic Artifacts of Athas."

I am surprised that Dragonstar hasn't been mentioned yet; it introduces the concept of spellware, a form of arcane biomodification.

When a character upgrades tmeslf, they must see an NPC or other character that has ranks in Surgeon an spend XP. The DM must make a Surgeon check based on the difficulty of the procedure for each day the player's character needs to be tended to. A failure by 5 points or more indicated no progress is made for that day. The process of implanting spellware takes 1 hour per 1,000 credits the procedure costs and minimum of 8 hours worth of work by the surgeon must be made with one day's worth of work.

Here is some sample spellware:
Code:
Aquaform Changes respiratory sytem to allow extraction of oxygen from water
Enhanced Ability Tissue implants allows a +2, +4 or +6 to any one physical ability score
Fast Healing Runic surgery allows charater to gain said ability; can choose to gain FH 1 or FH2
Retractable Claws Think Wolverine
Subdermal Armor Runic surgery used to modify skin and muscle to give the character damage reduction of 5/magic or 10/magic
Translator Modifies the speech center of the brain; it allows the character to speak and understand the language of any intelligent creature ala [i]tongues[/i]
These samples are just a portion of arcane spellware. There is also Divine Spellware.

Added 5th Element's Bloodlines to the OP. It turns the Unearthed Arcana bloodlines into something similar to paragon levels.

The Indie RPG Award-nominated vs. Elves covers some of this, albeit in the context of material intended for actual play (no essays here, friend) and the old FGU boxed set for Swordbearer had a magic system based on "nodes" (a kind of biological organ harvested from living creatures, IIRC).

Didn't the elves from the Spelljammer setting who fought in the Unhuman Wars have elves special breed like Guyver from the manga? I know that the orcs and scro had their fair share of nasty stuff.

One of my favorite SJ critters, the Bionoid, is what I believe you are referring to. There was also an undead bug exoskeleton thingy, though I don't remember the name of it.
