Fantasy food

Cockatrice eggs? They'll sit there like a rock in your stomach all day...

On a more reasonable note - Let us remember something - good and neutral civilizations will probably have some restrictions about eating sentient critters (even evil ones).

As my campaign is set primarily underwater, the party seldom has the opportunity to drop by a local tavern, for a bite to eat, or to the local provisioner, for standard rations.

Most of their rations are caught either by hunting (and catching a blue marlin with a trident is no easy task, I assure you) or foraging. However, on rare occasions when they are the guests of a local aquatic tribe, they have sampled fare such as inkwine, sweetsponge, fish wrapped in kelp (sushi), and certain soft corals.

Since we drylander are often fond of fishing, I devised "birding" for my Aquan races. They float a baited lasso to the surface, wait on a seagull to take the bait, and viola!
 



There was an old adventure in, like I13 or I11 or something called Steaks that I ran once... turned out the new smash success restaraunt was serving unicorn steak...

I have a great number of odd dishes in my campaign. Locathah is a delicacy and the landling races are steadfastly in denial about their sentience. Tiley is an alcoholic beverage made from extremely diluted dragon's blood; it is the most potent alcohol known. Blue onions grow in the water, much moister than a land onion. (Think of an onion with the texture of watermelon.)
 

I remember that adventure about the steaks. I ran it, too. It was in a supplement that had several short adventures in it.

I like finding out foods that my players hate in real life, and in the game presenting them with dishes built around those foods. For some reason, even though it is fantasy, that freaks them out.
 

*Spiced ying-yang (not sure, but our oriental character loved it)

*Faux Tarrasque (or at least one man's interpretation of what the most fearsome beast alive my taste like)

*Snow bunnies--roasted over an open fire

It's too early in the day for me to remember more that I've made for my FR campaign. But that's a good spread of examples.

That probably wouldn't work with me. I'm too used to doing this in RPGs. You see, I find beer disgusting. It looks like urine and smells worse. I'm not really fond of other forms of alcohol either and pretty much don't drink in real life (the occasional toast at a wedding or some occasion like that being about the only exception). Yet all of my fantasy characters drink alcohol and only the most aristocratic ones drink other alcoholic beverages like wine in preference to beer or ale.

To comment on the tread in general, I usually research relevant cultures and use foods from them. One fairly common item I add to trail rations is dried and smoked sausage. This is a fairly common thing for hunters to make where I come from and I read an article once that described German mercenaries using stuff pretty much exactly like what we make as part of their trail rations. It's not as hard as jerky but keeps pretty well and has a different taste
