has anyone used sidekicks? is a sidekick basically a mercenary without pay? Watched a D&D beyond video and it seems very different from the starter set where sidekicks are for tiny groups (1 and a dm)?

They're basically super stripped down fighter/rogue/spellcaster that you can use for NPC allies, like 3.5 NPC classes - one example is an animal friend can get the fighter-equivalent levels to keep up with the party. What they've done is taken the starter set sidekicks, expanded them to a full 20 levels, and cleaned them up to be even more straightforward (I think they also nerfed the spellcaster to not have full caster progression?) They're useful for more than just tiny groups, as noted by the animal friend example.

I've used them (Essentials Set version) for NPC associates of the party. They may want paying, that's up to the DM.
