Fantasy Names

Alternately, you can do what my parents did and accidentally name your kid after a superhero that you've never heard of.
You poor kid - I can imagine the heck you were given in school:

"Alan Scott. He has a weakness for wood."

"Huh uh huh. You said 'wood'."

Jadzia (Jadzia Dax from Star Trek, though that might be getting too far afield...)
My daughter's middle name is Nerys. As in Colonel Kira Nerys, of DS9. Seemed to kind of irritate members of my wife's family - the same ones who advised her to have an abortion when she conceived our son. So, bonus! :]

Yeah, Moon Unit Zappa was bad, but now she just goes by Moon Zappa. Kinda pretty - and with Frank as her dad, she had no hope of a normal life, anyway. ;)

Amethyst can be shortened to "Amy."

As a general rule, I'm going to agree with most of the posters already here - give your kid a name that's unique, but not one that's going to get them pounded on by bullies.

My real name is "Kennon" and my younger sister is "Callee (yeah, it's common now, but it wasn't when she was born)" and my younger brother is "Keaton." None of us exactly had normal names, but they weren't so strange that we got weird looks, or anything. None of us shorten our names, but we could without difficulty.

I also have an aunt named "Kimeron" which I always thought was a neat name: sounds cool normal and it's fine shortened as well.

This subject is very close to home for me. My second daughter was born yesterday, and my girlfriend and I decided on her name just a couple of hours ago. She'll be named Dina, after her great grandmother. Our first is named Angela, btw. Both are quite unusual names here in Norway, but not unusual enough to draw any funny looks.

I'll repeat what others have already said, and warn you against going too far, namewise. There are too many bullies out there...

So... Since we picked English names for our daughters, maybe you could go with something Norwegian? How about these, taken from the old Viking mythology:

Freya (Goddess of Love)
Sif/Siv (Goddess of Shield Maidens (female warriors))
Idun/Idunn (Goddess of Youth)
Frigg (Goddess of Motherhood)
Astrid/Astrild (Goddess of love)
Gerd (Earth Goddess)
Ran (Goddess of storms)
Saga (Goddess of poetry)
Skade (Goddess of winter and skiing)
Syn (Goddess of justice)
Sol (Sun Goddess)
Svalin (Sun Goddess)

...and finally a "preview" from Vikings D20:

Female Names: Anna, Anne, Aslaug, Astrid, Bjørg, Brynhild, Dis, Ella, Freya, Frid, Frida, Gunhild, Gunn, Gyda, Herborg, Hervor, Hilda, Hilde, Holmfrid, Idun, Inga, Ingebjørg, Olaug, Olrun, Kari, Ragnhild, Sif, Sigrid, Siv, Tora, Torbjørg, Torhild, Trude, Tyra, Ulfhild, Vigdis

My rule of thumb has been to give my kids a relatively normal first name, and an interesting middle name: It may be neat to have her friends call her "Galadriel", but Jessica G. is a lot more likely to get hired, I think. ;)
I agree, I like the name Ava but want something fantasy based for a middle name unless something really strikes me for a first name:)

It would probably help, btw, if we had your last name - names need to flow all the way through.

SJ's surname is Heywood, and mine is Glover. We're not married obviously (the shame, oh the shaaaaaame) so we're not sure which surname the baby will be blessed with yet, but I think more likely than not it will be Heywood.

It's a nightmare actually, I had about twenty bloody boy's names to pick from, had to be awkward and be a girl though :p

I was a big fan of the names of Arthurian Legend... like Uther (Oo-ther) Pendragon. Like people have already said though, we've gotta remember our limitations. "Far-out" middle names are fair-play, but I daresay bullies will have a field day if we stray too much on her first name :\
