Faster feats - keeping them from getting out of hand

That is true. One could apply it to monsters as well to keep it really balanced.
Then again, the same could be said of any of the extra feat schemes listed here. Under those circumstances, any of them are balanced. How stupid of me to forget that.

Yeah, but if you up the feats for the NPCs, too, then everything stays "balanced."

That's what I do. Frankly, I think the players are almost ready to go back to the normal way since monsters have a lot more cool abilities based on feats especially in these higher levels.

Yeah, metabreath, multiweapon fighting, ability focus, virulent poison, hurl limbs...anything from Savage Species or the dragon feats section of Draconomicon (or the other type books) should make PC shake in their boots...

Not even that. Improved Toughness, bonuses to saves, there are plenty of defensive feats that will allow monsters to stick around longer. Of course there is also fun with sundering giants.

The great thing about it is that you can break it down by race or region or organization or whatever and get a nice theme going.

Yup. I was thinking pointing players at planar feats, seafaring feats, and faction feats.

OK, Crothian...a little clarification if you will. If every class gets a feat per level, how do you keep the Ftr balanced vis a vis other PCs? Do they get 1/level + their usual bonus feats?

Of course they do. The classes stay the same, it is just that how often feats are gained by character level that is the same. I also use a lot of books so the fighters, even high level ones never run out of feats to choose.

I give out a feat every level. The players are now 14-15 level, so they have a lot of feats. I don't limit the feats they can take, and no one has yet abused anything. Well, the archer ranger guy has but it hasn't been bad. I do give monsters and NPCs extra feats so it balances out pretty fast.

I was also considering increasing the number of feats across the board (PCs and NPCs) but I'm worried about the amount of extra work it takes. Since I only have a limited amount of time to prep adventures (hence why I am currently running Shackled City) I don't want to have to spend too much time re-adjusting the stats of NPC's to be more balanced.

Truthfully, I have standard feats that most NPCs get. THe saving thow boosting ones, improved toughness,...if they have power attack I usually give them cleave, great cleave, weapon focus and other offensive feats. If they are smart I'll go with combat expertise or things like that. I keep it simple and mostly use feats I know really well or ones that can easily modify a stat block without changing much.

The really cool part of the feat per level is it lets you get all the cool little character feats you can't get with 1/3 levels.

Frex, my pirate has Quick Draw, Improved Initiative and Scourge of the Seas, if I only had 2 feats total, I would have felt forced to min/max due to their lack.

I like Seafaring feats every 3rd level, too, Stormwrack has some great stuff. (Like Scourge of the Seas!)
