Favored Enemy: Objects

Due to his study of weapons, armor, and other creations, a Ranger may decide that disabling these objects is a better tactical solution than fighting an opponent with its full strength.

[FONT=&quot]A Ranger who takes Favored Enemy: Objects gains a +2 bonus on Appraise, Disable Device, and Search checks. He likewise gets a +2 bonus on damage, disarm and sunder rolls against objects.

Probably a bit overpowered since every ranger with any sense would take it, but it's still a fun variation. I switched the skill bonuses around because Bluff and Survival et al don't work on objects very well.

Considering the idea behind "favoured enemies" from previous editions (ie: an enemy type that has slighted you in the past, in general), I don't see this really fitting the flavour.

However, it's amusing.

In D&D there are intelligent objects though. Going with the flavor you mentioned could mean the Ranger was slighted by an enemy or group of enemies with such an object. I realize it seems like I'm grasping at straws, but such a concept is possible.

I like the idea a lot.

I need to think about the implementation. I've been wanting a saboteur type feat tree for fighters, and I can see something like the above being a feat with Favored Enemy: Constructs as a prerequisite.

You could say that the Fighter gives up his 1st, 6th, 10th, 16th, and 20th level Fighter feats to gain the Favored Enemy progression of a Ranger.

As far as flavor is concerned, I think this works nicely with the "urban ranger" archetype.

The combat advantages do seem overpowered to me; maybe drop the bonus to disarm, and keep only that to sunder? And/or limit damage to damage against manufactured objects? Or something?

I don't know... but I'm definitely interested to see where this goes.

Yeah, removing the bonus to disarm might be in the works. The reason it's there though is because the typical Favored Enemy bonuses grant extras on six skills, including damage rolls, so I felt it might be worthwhile to have this also grant bonuses for six areas.

As for whether to do it against all objects or just manufactured ones, part of the intent with this is also to grant a slight but noticeable bonus against walls and obstructions. Perhaps add in flavor text saying the sunder and damage bonuses only work at one-half against everything but manufactured objects?

Thanks for the XP by the way!

Doesn't the favoured enemy option require a revenge history or something that kind?

And after all, why a man living in the wild lands should be expert of armor or other objects from the city?

Bye, MadLuke.
