Favored Enemy Question

Mortis

First Post
In a recent session of FR my character took a level of ranger and due to his background chose Favored Enemy (Humanoid - Drow). This got me thinking, did I have to be that specific or could I have choosen Favored Enemy (Humanoid - Elf) and include drow in that?

The latter. The elven subraces are similar enough, so your ranger would know how to effectively fight each of them, even though he mostly battles the drow.

That makes sense if the bonus is due to anatomy etc., but if it's down to a cultural style of fighting then surely drow and elves would be different.

A house rule I've seen that I liked allows a character to take a more specific favored enemy at an increased bonus. So, for this example, Favored Enemy: Drow would give a 1 or 2 pt higher bonus than Favored Enemy: Elf. You might want to ask your DM if he will allow this option.

That's an idea. The favored enemy was actually a bonus, I had taken ranger to get the track feat so I could qualify for the Dark Slayer prestige class. In order to venture back into the Underdark to kick some drow butt. :D The again, I've just found the Sworn Slayer prestige class in Dragon which would fit with his background as well. This background is, very briefly, born to two human slaves of the drow, saw them sacrified to Lloth before he was 6, escaped when his work party was attacked by deep dwarves. Made it eventually to the surface and lived in Westgate for a time as a member of the Nightmasks. Took up adventuring and is now going back to the Underdark. His classes are Rogue(7), Guild Thief(1), Dungeon Delver(2) and Ranger(1).

As many other people have already said... its the 2nd. Only reason I'm Chime is because I have an old 2e Character converted to 3e who among his other stuff, has 5 Ranger lvls with Favored Enemy Orc and Elf... with 5 levels of Sworn Slayer (PrC from Dragon). He also has the Improved Favored Enemy feat from CW. I'll write up the abilities of the SS to show why this is relevant to your question... sorry if I'm rambling (just woke up)

Keep in mind these "quotes" are in my own words :P
the Sworn Slayer (from Dragon #324) said:
BA: good, Saves: fort, HD: d10, Skills: 4 + intmod

1st,3rd,5th: Sworn Foe (ex): The SS chooses a creature type to be his Sworn Foe, at 1st, 3rd, and 5th he gets an +1 dmg and relevant skills (as Favored Enemy). This bonus stacks with Favored Enemy. (with this, my Rgr 5 w/IFE has vs Elves +10)

2nd, 4th ~ Determination: The Sworn Slayer gains a +2 bonus on all saves against the special attacks, spells, and spell-like abilities of creatures of his Sworn Foe type. This raises to +4 at 4th.

2nd, 4th ~ Animosity (Su): As per Sworn foe, except the SS focuses more upon a specific enemy. If his Sworn Foe is "Undead", then his Animosity could be against "Vampires", "Lichs", or "Mummys" (Mine is Sworn Foe: Elf, Animosity: Drow). At 2nd lvl his Animosity bonus is +3, and at 4th it raises to +5. (Thus at this point, my Drow Slayer has Orcs +5, Elves +10, Drow +15)

3rd ~ Nemesis (Su): The Slayer gains the Nemesis feat for free that applys vs his Sworn Foe. For Neutral or Evil SS, the granted bonus feat loses its exalted status and becomes a regular feat... nongood SS do not radiate an Aurua of Good. (Damn thats cool...)

5th ~ Slayer Attack: Assassin Sworn Foe, Fort save is DC 10 + SS class lvl + Int Mod. This is written in such a way as it will destroy whatever your Sworn Foe is... Constructs, Undead, Oozes...

So yeah, obviously that wasn't an exact quote, I lack the patience atm to write it up as written. If you have any questions about this PrC (which I'm a huge fan of... as it allows me to create Janus "Drowbane" Nasadra-Starym in 3.5) send me an e-mail at DB_SD_VA@hotmail.com Be sure to put ENworld somewhere in the "subject"

Damn Mortis, we should compare notes on our Drow Slaying techniques :D

Why didn't you just take the Track feat? It's available even to non-rangers.
Because I had just made level 11 and wasn't intitled to a feat. ;)

Yes, I know about the Sworn Slayer Prc (in fact I mentioned it in this very thread :D ), I'll be taking it (assuming GM approval) after 2 levels of Dark Slayer. It does bring up some good role-playing issues as we have a 'reformed' drow in the party (not a Drizzt clone for a change). We're the rogues in the party and are known as the 'black and white rogue show'.

That's my next feat at level 12.
