Favorite Campaign setting

My favorite is the FRCS - but heavily modified. I am currently running two weekly campaigns in the FR, and I like the different cultures and regions I can place them in. I do have to do some heavy editing to make it work for me.

It really depends on what kind of game you want to run.

Forgotten Realms really is a surprisingly good setting for traditional heroic fantasy. Kinda high-magic, but that lends well to high fantasy, where the heroes can truely do incredible things in the fight against powerful foes.

Ravenloft is a much more low-key, gothic campaign. Here, you don't want to stand out too much, because the real evils (Darklords) can grind most PCs to paste. Regions vary from primitive, almost barbaric; to traditional low-to-mid magic fantasy; to Rennaisance tech; to incredibly surreal and unusual (Bluetspur, anyone?).

Dragonlance is a pretty good mid-magic fantasy setting, as is Greyhawk. Each is well-suited for epic campaigns, where the heroes can change the political landscape of the region and battle entire armies for the fate of the world.

I'm not as familiar with most third-party settings, so I can't say much about them.

Homebrews really are hard to beat...

That said, for years I was hardcore Greyhawk gamer and certainly prefer it over the FR. Dark Sun was a fun diversion for a while but Planescape was, by far, my favorite (with the exception of the cute & cuddly Fiends :D ).

Cheers!

A'koss.
