1E DMG - an almost mythical tome in its own right, it is pure gold to me. Not that I use every rule : ) Style matters. Gary had it in spades.

Also the RIFTS core book - a truly refreshing gonzo blast after years of AD&D.

Any of the 1E sourcebooks, and the 3.5E PHB/DMG, City State of the Invincible Overlord and Wilderlands of High Fantasy would be my go-to settings though.

I've always found the City of Splendors guide to Waterdeep (Forgotten Realms) as an excellent example of a thematic city-based sourcebook. Not only was it dense with crunchy material and pretty art, it contains some very good writing that brought a fantasy city to life.

It's hard to pick, but there is one that keeps rising to the top, which is Heroes of Battle. It's the model I think most supplements should base themselves on..
